Windows XP Pro SP 2

I face to an interesting situations which are never done before:

1) In a folder I had many files and wanted to sort them. I created a New Folder, sorted this folder with files by Name, gave a name to New Folder. Then sorted again by Name. I selected the files with named folder which will be moved to this named folder by Ctrl+left mouse button as usual way. I deselected the named folder, and I drag and dropped the selected files to named folder. Despite the named folder is empty at the beginning, the Confirm File Replace pop-up appeared!!! It prompted me replace the files with same name but with different file sizes...? I cancelled the operation. There were some files inside it, then I cutted them and paste to original location. I tried once more the same operation and this time I've got it.
Could it be or what wrong thing could I do?

2) Also, when I drag and dropped some files to named folder, a pop-up dialog box told me that the file name is long despite it is already in another (previous in operation) folder with this long name!!!
I made a solution for that: I copied its name to Clipboard, gave it a short name, drag and dropped it to named folder, then I gave the copied original name back to the file while its in the named folder. Its done! But I've seen that the file name is not like in original position e.g. some letters are lost. (By the way, I'm not sure for this as I cannot remember whether the original file name is full)
Whats this?

Thank you...
