Does anybody know how to make a working DVD9<DVD5 backup of Kessen 3? One that doesn't just freeze at the opening KOEI screen.

Hello all,

Now, I'm not an old pro at PS2 backups, nor am I a novice. I've been backing up ps2 games for about 3 months now and have about 35 titles so far. On several occasions I've noticed people who are having problems burning this title or that title. Splinter Cell, Ratchet & Clank: UYA, X-Men Legends, etc...

When I started backing up my games, I used Alcohol 120% to rip AND burn the images. To date, I have only run into one game that wasn't a perfect backup; GTA: SA. Now, the game worked but the PS2 had problems with streaming each section of the new maps. There was a short lag and I would get a message saying, "Unable to read disc" for about 3-5 seconds then the game would come back on and play as usual until it had to load a new map for the next section of town as I proceeded through the game.

I considered this a "functional" backup but not a perfect duplicate.

The only thing I can see that hasn't been mentioned in the forums (unless I've not searched enough) is AnyDVD. I have that program in my taskbar constantly because I do a lot of DVD construction, editing, and duplication. Now it doesn't find any protection on the PS2 games so it may not be a factor....but I find it strange that I have so many backups of games that others are finding it difficult to accomplish.

Soon, I will have God of War. I have Gran Turismo 4 saved on my hard drive for when I get a dual layer DVD. When I burn GT4, I am going to burn it directly to the DVD using Alcohol as I always have and will post the results on here. When I get God of War, I will back it up exactly as I have all the rest of my PS2 games and will also post the results on here.

To date, I have never had to close any apps in the background, nor have I had to restrict the burn speed by any degree.

Any questions, you know where to find me.

DVD RW: NEC ND-3500AG
CD RW: Optorite CW5207
CPU: Athlon XP 3000+ Barton Core
RAM: 1024 PC2100 DDR
Media: Memorex DVD-R (always)
Alcohol ver: 1.9.5 (Build 2722) *Used on all burns to date

unless your ps2 can load dual layer disks, you are wasting your time, and disks.god of war has to be rebuilt, and whether someone has cracked gt4 yet,i dont know,i have wasted enough time on that one

if you have a mod chip installed, you wont have any trouble with these games

AnyDVD
this has nothing to do with your success, anydvd has no effect on ps2 software

thats because you are using memorex dvd's (dvd-r),i can guanrantee you that.....they are poor
if your ps2 supports dvd+r,use them, and good quality ones, not memorex,i can promise you it will work.

hopes this clears a few things up for you

DANBOOKE,

I noticed that Kessen 3 is on your list. I was wondering; how did you manage a working DVD5 copy without it freezing at the KOEI opening screen?

HURSTY,

I REALLY need an answer to this one as this is the ONLY game I've come across (other than GT4) that hasn't worked: NO MATTER WHAT I DO.

Hurtsy,

As for the dual layer reading....aren't movie DVD's dual layer?? I dunno, maybe I'm missing something I'm not aware of.

I have no mod chip installed. I am using a modded PS2 Slim and swap magic, nothing more.

GTA: SA; being the only one I haven't "successfully" burned, I think the media I'm using has been serving it's purpose to date. I never use +R for anything. They are less compatible, in my experience, than -R. Brand has never affected any of my burning, DVD, CD, or otherwise. I've used several brands and burned at various speeds and have only had difficulty backing up CD protected software. I'm no noob to burning.

I appreciate your input however. I'm always open to debate, criticism, etc...

kaofury - Sorry I can't really help you on this one. I downloaded an already cracked version of this game and it burnt just fine and played just fine. The only problem is this game actually sucks, it's not even worth the media you would burn it to.

ODIUM - Not all movie DVD's are dual layered, the cheap ones you can get of old 80's movies like Drop Dead Fred and Cyborg out of the 2 for $11 bin at Wal-Mart are usually on single layer discs. But you get what you pay for, if you notice when you actually play these movies, they have barely any special features, if at all. Newer movies are mostly dual layered just because of the fact they have HOURS of special features on them. The best way to tell? Look at the bottom of the disc. If it is silver, then it is a single layer DVD, if it is gold, it is a dual layered disc. I agree with you on the +R discs, I find them to be more unstable than the -R discs, so that is all I burn to. As far as Hursty's suggestion about Memorex DVD's, I agree with him. Memorex deals with the lowest bids they can get from manufacturers, so almost no two batches of their blank media is the same. You may get lucky with some, but you'll also pick up a bad batch also (I know I used to only deal with Memorex media until they started making my games skip like crazy) I also feel like there is some urban myth out there that you have to do something to GTA San Andreas to get it to play properly. Maybe there is but not for me. I burned the game using Nero's copy disc function, and it plays just fine (odly enough it's on a good Memorex DVD!) Now I have a 92% completion of the game so far and haven't had a hickup yet...
