Hmm, so overall you guys would not recommend Memorex Dvd-R at all? It's quite unfortunate i didnt have such knowledge about these dvd-r earlier. I brought a 50 pack spindle and used only 3 of them so far. Is Verbatim dvd-r really the way to go? Do they make good dvd-r that will last very long? These memorex look just fine to me, the dye used on the bottom looks pretty stable and I can read all the files on them just fine. There about 3 months old so far. Im kinda a noob on burning media and such so i need these questions answered:

-Is memorex a great brand overall in dvd-r (mine are made by CMC)?
-Are verbatim dvd-r dependable? (The cd-r i have, the surface peels off just by scratching it)
-Are TDK cd-r's dependable (made by CMC magnetics)?
-Are verbatim cd-r dependable?

Hmm alrite thanks guys. So you guys would recommend Verbatim CD-R? Is there a certain manufacturer I should look for for Data Life Plus? There is a DLP cd-r of Verbatim I have here and I can basically scratch off the top part. The bottom is a blue dye. Is it a good cd-r? I brought another TDK cd-r spindle yesterday, it came with 5 plastic white ring separators and its made in Taiwan by CMC. I emailed TDK support the other day and they said they still use HQ methods and materials to make the best cd-r regardless of OEM. Should I stick to using TDK or should i start using Verbatim. So far....I have 2 cd-r spindle of Memorex, 2 of tdk, and 1 dvd-r memorex spindle.

Alrite, so verbatim is the way to go. For cd-r and dvd-r, is it just verbatim, or verbatim regular and datalifeplus. Which one? Verbatim DLP is better than the other?

I know. I am even after all my ranting in raving to buy cheap media once in awile. I won't though, when you have to reback up like 50 dvd's it make you think twice from buying those memorex... believe me... you have to learn the hard way sometimes i guess

LOL good thing I learned a little early then. I wasted 20 something on a 50 spindle cakebox of Memorex, courtesy of CMC Magnetics. I have only used up 3 of these, and 2 Memorex DVD+R. They burnt fine, but I'm going to transfer everything on those Memorex and burn onto my Verbatim Dvd+R which are made by MMC. Thanks for the help guys. Verbatim all the way! LOL. I also brought a cd-r spindle of Verbatim.

LOL wow, the dvd manufacturer for my Verbatim is MMC, Mitsubishi Chemicals and it ranks as top media. Thats strange, if you take a DVD+R of Verbatim and a DVD-R of Memorex and compare the bottom, they look exactly the same. I guess looks can be deceiving. I wonder what I should do with my Memorex DVD-R's now, I got about 47 unused. Thinking about using them as shurikens, all there good for :). Maybe a little skeet shooting with these instead of clay pidgeons.

comparing the dyes of memorex to verbatim, usually to the human eye is not discernable~ unless you got microscopic/super magnification eyesight~ :P dvd media pretty much ALL look the same on the dye surface, it's what actually GOES into making them that matters in the long run~ :)

Heh definitely since Memorex and Verbatim DVDs surface look exactly the same, same color. The manufacturer CMC against MMC though is quite different. If you want cheap Verbatim DVD, go to Circuit City now. I brought a 25 pack for 9.99!!! I also brought a 50 cakebox spindle of Verbatim cd-r for like 3 dollars. The 100 cakebox is 9 bux. Super deals, I'm going back there tonight and emptying their stock of Verbatim products =).

I have some Verbatim CD-Rs that I've been using and they are made by Prodisc. They seem OK, though. I have scads of CDs that are several years old made by various manufacturors and a good many of them are unreadable. I went mostly by price in those days. So far the only DVDs that I've had do that had labels on them. I have had a few old ones that started getting high PI/PIF scans but would still play. I transferred these to better discs.

As of now I'm only depending on Verbatim DVD+R to back up all my data reliably. The CD-R scan of Verbatim showed the manufacturer to be Verbatim and these are made in Taiwan. Don't know if thats good or not. These aren't Data Life Plus CD-R's either, just regular Verbatim. The dye on the bottom of these are a little lighter blue than the darker blue of the Verbatim Data Life Plus. I'm still hoping I can depend on these though, I just started my first spindle of Verbatim CD-R, the rest are very unreliable Memorex and TDK. I'm hoping the Verbatim DVD's will back the crappy CD-R media =) These Verbatim CD-R look a little "chipped" on the sides of some but I'm sure that this will not affect them.

I know this is supposed to be a Memorex DL thread, but since it's turned into a TY/Verbatim thread I thought I would add some of my experiences. I recently bought 100 TY 8X hub printable from Supermediastore.com for $61.00. Since they were so expensive I thought they should be good. I seem to have a problem with probably more than 1 out of every 10 of them. They either burn excellently or they are a coaster. I believe they are genuine TY. The code on the hub is GG000095. I primarily burn them on my Pioneer DVR-109. I also have a Lite-On SOHW-1633S and an LG GSA-4163B, but the Pioneer seems to be the best burner. If there are any bad discs out there I seem to have the ability to get them. This particular disc is a TYG02 8X -R burned at 8X on my Pioneer. Look at these scans:

You can see in the picture of the disc there is a circle a ways out from the center. I don't know what that is. I've never noticed it before. It could be caused by the burner shifting from 6X to 8X, but that happens at about 10% of the burn. The bad area is about 16-17% into the burn. Who knows. I'm sure I'll see more of this.

@forkndave, don't worry about it, it's probably me veering off Memorex - it happens with media cus ppl join the threads and don't read up anything first, not even replies a few above theirs, then i end up having to explain over and over why substandard media is crap whether it's Memorex or whoever.

As to that difference in colour after the burn in the centre, a couple of mine have that. I'll dig them out 2nite and CRC scan them as the only difference in colour you should see is at the outer edge of disc where you haven't burnt up to.

As for your CRC errors that's atrocious

EDIT- that CRC scan is <swearword bleeped out!> VERY bad - 948 errors, and in the one section of disc by looks of it. How many discs have these problems ?

I haven't noticed that circle before. I've been getting a fair number of coasters lately with TY and occasionally one with Verbatim. I just can't seem to make myself burn slower than 8X as long as I'm using decent discs. What usually happens is my Pioneer will burn about 500 MB or so and then it's supposed to shift to 8X. What it will do with TY sometimes is burn 500 MB at 6X and stop. It will indicate it's still burning, but 20 minutes later it's still around 10%. I generally have to remove power from the computer to get the disc out then. I've tried every firmware that I can find, but I still get this every once in a while, usually with a TY. About 90% of the time this doesn't happen I've heard that many of the DVR-109s are a POS. Maybe I have one. It's just that it burns so well when everything goes right. This is what TY scans normally look like:

This was burned right after the other one, same conditions except for a different movie. I'm kind of a fanatic, sometimes, about checking discs. On every disc I run a quick disc quality test with Nero CD/DVD Speed. This spot checks the PI and PIF. If I see any big spikes I'll run a full K Probe test. I always use K Probe to check the first and last 5-10% of the disc because that's where most of the problems occur. I don't usually do a CRC test unless I see a problem. Like on those horrible Kprobe scans I had in another thread on Verbatim DL discs. I did check the CRC errors then.

@forkndave - i may have mentioned this further up the thread, i only got into the PIF scanning lark to get a feel for how it all works, i don't bother with it very often, nor CRC scanning. However when i do have need to check a disc i will always lean towards CRC scanning as a more exact test. I think i did mention it in the first link in my sig too, but i've found some of these PIF scans say zero errors, what looks to be a cracking PIF/PIE scan too, but CRC scanned and found loads of corruption.

That colour change on back of your disc in that picture may well correspond with the huge amount of corruption that the CRC scan showed..

creaky..... do you think it's his burner? TYs and Verbatims..... they are supposed to be one of the cream of the crops! I know that every now and then a disk may be in there that might be semi disfunctional but to have one coaster after another like forkndave has!? I haven't heard of anyone having this much probs with these disks!!!
