Everything looks OK except one thing.
When I start up I have this pop-up notifying me that Activity Monitor Agent is Active. My McSheild says its spyware but can't shut it down. I don't know if it is or is not. The company has always said it has a big brother program which is fine with me. Just wondering because I've never gotten the notification before now and it is not running on other machines in my group.

Should I be concerned ?

@kemisti

It looks like the Activity Monitor Agent is a keylogging program that runs remotely and cannot be shut down without administrator permission (according to the website) It doesn't show up that I can tell as a running process in task manager but it shows up when I first start up with some notification pop-ups (one with a 'buy now' button. If I 'x' out of the pop-up to avoid 'OK' it docks onto my start bar as a running proccess.

The first notification window displays:

"This computer and its associated resources are subject to monitoring in accordance with the Information Systems Acceptable Use Policy (POLICY).

Use of this computer constitutes agreement with the POLICY and consent to monitoring.

If you would like to review the POLICY in its entirety, please contact the system administrator."

with OK and ABOUT buttons
OK and 'X' dock it
ABOUT brins up new window displaying

"Activity Monitor Agent
Version 3.8
Copyright 2000-2004

Deep Software"

with OK, VISIT WEBSITE, and BUY NOW buttons

The deep software is a link that takes you to
http://www.softactivity.com/?ref=amagent

I don't know if the whole thing is bogus or not.
The description that it is a key logger is disturbing.
With no one else in the group having it run is why I ask.

@tgauss: Let's run one online scan (with IE, not with FireFox)

Please do an online scan with http://www.kaspersky.com/downloads/kws/kavwebscan.htmlKaspersky Online Scanner. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
[*] The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
[*] Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
[*] Now click on Scan Settings
[*] In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:

o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:

+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)

o Scan Options:

+ Scan Archives
+ Scan Mail Bases

[*] Click OK
[*] Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
[*] The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
[*] Now click on the Save as Text button
[*] Save the file to your desktop.
[*] Copy and paste that information in your next post.

@kemisti

unfortunately, my computer is on a network that won't let this scanner run without permissions, or something like that. The update fails and only option is to exit.

@tgauss: Let's try this instead:

Please run this online scan:

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
[*] Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC button
[*]A new window will open...click the Check Now button
[*]Enter your Country
[*]Enter your State/Province
[*]Enter your e-mail address and click send
[*]Select either Home User or Company
[*]Click the big Scan Now button
[*]If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
[*]It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
[*]When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
[*]When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log

@bobofeit: Glad to hear :)

@nukeaf: Send a HijackThis log, instructions -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/263784 (steps 3-5)

Also, do this:

Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

Unzip it (folder named SmitFraudFix) to your desktop:

Open the folder SmitfraudFix and doubleclick smitfraudfix.cmd
Choose option #1 - Search by typing 1 and pressing "Enter"; a textfile opens and lists the infected files (if those exist)

Post the contents of this textfile to here.

(Some antiviruses recognises process.exe as a malware. It is not malware, it is a program that stops processes)

I got the w32.Myzor.FK@yf virus. I ran the smitfruadfix. It fixed everything except an occasional popup window explaining that my computer is infected, and that I should download some antimalware software to clean my viruses. Can you check this out? Thank you...

@KrieppeN:

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode(essential!!!). I see that you run it last in Normal mode. Fix doesn't work properly in normal mode.
If you don't do it in safe mode, it won't go away.
[*]If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
[*]Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
[*]Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
[*]Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
[*]Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
[*]Login on your usual account.
______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Send:

- c:\rapport.txt
- a fresh HjT log.

@4bear:

Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop (latest version, 2.60) -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

@tgauss: Sorry, I've forgot to answer you :(

Download WinPFind.zip -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/oldtimer/WinPFind.zip and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder. Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

When it is done, it will show the results of the scan. Click on the Copy to Clipboard button and then paste the contents of the log in your clipboard as a reply to where you are receiving help

@KrieppeN: Once again, you run smitfraudfix in normal mode. It doesn't work so. I already told you to run it in safe mode. Follow my previous instructions and do it in safe mode! If you don´t follow my instructions, your computer won´t get cleaned. But then it's your fault, not mine.

Also, you need to update smitfraudfix. Newest version is 2.61.

Here's how to boot in safe mode if my instructions weren't good enough -> http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

@SRK_UK:

Download SmitfraudFix.zip to your desktop -> http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip

@SRK_UK:

* Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually)
* Double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
* Select 2 and hit Enter to delete infect files.
* You will be prompted: Do you want to clean the registry ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.
* The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found): Replace infected file ? answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
* A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process. The report can be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Send contents of that file here and a fresh HjT log.

Ok. I did as instructed. I didn't see anything asking me to replay the dll file, though, but reboot and opening IE looks better now.
