Why is everyone so worried about ripit4me? there are other programs out there and their easier to work too.

I'm not.. I don't use it at all. As a tool it works, but there are other ways. The more tools you have the better your chances.

shiloh72,

i dont think that we are worried, it is that we are disappointed,
and that most of the members here have more than one way of backing up dvds.

BTW, i am not going to comment on how good dvdcloner is since i never used it, however RI4M was one of the best programs out there and still is as of right now.

edit-i cant speel ;)

People are more worried about the political climate than the actual software itself. However, RipIt4Me was one of the leading decryption programs. Your DVDCloner and 1ClickDVDCopy and others of the sort can sometimes do a movie only backup or eventually the software will get updated to handle the more difficult copy protections. Free programs like RipIt4Me and DVDFab Decrypter are more rare because they're cutting edge (consistently handling the newest copy protections) and free. That leaves DVDFab Decrypter as the top rated free decryption program that still has support.

So, excuse us if we don't like losing one of our favorite tools. In the past we didn't like seeing DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink losing support. They're still around and being used, which goes to show how good they are. Hopefully RipIt4Me (or a similar program) will reappear in a less politically controlled setting.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. Many people have a hell of a lot of respect for that program for a whole lot of reasons. Reasons like how well thought out it was, how it incorporated DVDD and DVD Shrink, which are two programs that are long abandoned but still remain favorites among many diehards (which is a testament to how well designed they were), how the "Tools" section could facilitate in hooking other programs into the mix to be able to do about anything you wanted. The list of RipIt4Me's capabilities goes on and on. There might not be another one like it to come along anytime soon, so yes, people are still talking about it (and what happened to it) and probably will be for awhile. Actually there is probably a lot more people who want to talk about it but won't because forums are telling them to shut up about it and they go with the flow. Some forums actually give you warnings (or as they put it, "strikes") if you keep bringing it up or question the "shut up" mentality.

Of course people move on, it's the nature of things. RipIt4Me may be defunct but it's not dead by any means. It will continue to work just fine for quite some time and I will continue to use it for as long as gets the job done. It may be harder now for people who have issues to get help (especially newbies cause there is a learning curve for setup and use) cause no one wants to take a chance now to allow discussion about those things. RipIt4Me was about as underground as you could get (and is now driven further underground) and now so will the discussions.

Well, I've mentioned here many times that this was the likely downfall of freeware in every case so far.....Macrovision owns DVD Decrypter so this is not at all surprising and because of this fact it was just a matter of time. I have suggested that more people understand the plight of retail-ware companies like Slysoft. By purchasing this type of software or any decrypting software sold we send a message to the establishment i.e. MPAA. And not a message of theft or piracy either, the message is their is a demand by honest enthusiast and collecters of DVD films to back up their purchased titles preservation purposes. Freeware and it's development at best is a bold but welcomed attempt by parties or individuals who seek to create a freedom or outlet in a software that allows anyone who chooses to to back up DVD movies to do so, But without financial support how can they legally justify or even defend their position for creating such a software? In fact by by preferring Freeware as a whole over Retail-ware it could be seen as just that piracy or theft as it cannot be determined who owns the software or a reason for needing or wanting decrypting software. So we say farewell again to yet another software that up until now supported those who needed it but we the end user investing in only the Freeware option and refusing support the very Freeware software they've come to rely on.:(

Yes there are many ways to backup your DVD and we all have our favorite way. I liked RI4M coupled with some other progies and I will continue to use it until it becomes obsolete. :) JM2C.

When I said RipIt4Me was underground, that was really an understatement. It's quite amazing to me how well the news regarding this has been kept so quiet. One can search and search the internet and can hardly find anything even mentioned about this program period. Currently not one website will touch it to do any kind of news/story on it. It's like it never existed. The coordination that must have been involved in this is rather staggering to me.

One would think there is a big story here to be told but apparently no one is interested in reporting this kind of news. RipIt4Me has been a mystery since it just popped into the scene, through it's life, and now its sudden departure. Hell, this could be a book (or at least a lengthy article). I'd sure read it.

I guess it goes to show that not only is RipIt4Me underground but so is the whole area of DVD ripping/burning. We are apparently even more in the minority that I thought with news agencies not even seeing anything newsworthy to report on this or figures there is no audience to hear it.

The entertainment industry and many governments don't distinguish between retail and free software. If software can create a copy, they don't like it. I've invested a few dollars in retail software, but I still like the good freeware programs when they come along. The problem with some of the good freeware is that it had origins in countries agreeing to copyright laws. Companies like Slysoft and DVDIdle have nothing to fear yet and are doing a booming business. I see nothing wrong with supporting both freeware and retail programming. Big Brother and the movie industry like neither.

I don't even consider the free vs paid in my decision which ones I want. For me it's all about which ones do the job best for me and which ones I like to use. I would have gladly paid for RipIt4Me, DVDD, DVD Shrink, Imgburn, with no hesitation. Being free is an extra bonus. I do have extra respect for the free ones cause I always admire the dedication and work involved of people who are doing this just for the love of doing it without even making a buck on it.

People making DVD backups is one of the most high profile undergrounds I've ever seen. Almost everyone with a PC is capable of doing a DVD backup and most are. The company famous for the most pervasive copy protection is double dipping by selling DVD burners and recordable media to make the backups (Sony). If governments were serious about stopping individuals from doing backups, they would outlaw the sale of DVD burners and recordable media.

Agreed. I guess I said what I did about the minority thing trying to come up with something in my head to explain why this is apparently not news. Maybe the forces that be have the power to keep it from being news? If so, that's scary. With some of the practices these forces use, I can imagine they would rather not have some of those things exposed (as news).

Dunno, I see so much of what reporters do these days, digging up every conceivable story about every conceivable thing, and more often than not, distorting it to be what they want it to be rather than what it really is. I just find it interesting that not one has latched onto this and did some big time digging to come up with a story. It just seems opposite of what the press usually does.

This seems to be bigger than RipIt4Me. At the DD software download section, all ripping software has been removed.

I noticed that. DVD Shrink has been taken off the software board. I tried different searches and any software that relates to digital copy protection seems to have been pulled. Seems only RipIt4Me was pulled from the forums. I can't find a copy of SmartRipper or reference to AnyDVD or DVD Region Free in DD Software. It appears the reason DD has the shut up attitude is because their butt is in the wringer for supplying ripping tools. That's getting bad when you can't even mention ripper software. So far they haven't pulled the old Decrypter and Shrink guides. Seems someone has DD by the "fine hairs". I guess they can tell us how to make audio CDs till the music industry says boo. I'm glad AD isn't curtailing free speech the way Digital Digest is.

- i hear you all, however we have to bear this in mind - http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/7179.cfm "As some of you might remember, Finnish Parliament approved a new copyright legislation in October, 2005 and that new legislation will come into force on 1st of January, 2006. As AfterDawn Ltd is a company based in Finland, we have to play along with the new law, however vague and draconian it is."

Quote:
as a summary, here are the changes that will take effect on 1st of January or shortly after that date:

1. Forums
* No changes. The law states that "organized discussion about breaking copy protections" will be illegal, but as nobody on our forums is planning to develop tools that break copy protections, we don't think it applies. Additionally, as everybody knows, our forums aren't exactly very organized ;-) And moderators aren't our staff members, our admins don't participate in threads discussing about how to break copy protection methods, ever.

2. Guides
* References how to use tools that allow circumventing copy protections will be removed
* This means that guides converting AVIs to DVD, etc will remain intact.
* This means that guides converting copy-protected DVDs to other formats will stay on our site, but the detailed instructions on how to use tools like DVD Decrypter, etc will be removed from those guides
* Guides considering just how to break copy protections, will be removed (AFAIK, only one guide applies here)
3. Software section
* Major changes. All tools meant solely for DVD ripping and/or ripping copy-protected music CDs will be removed.
* This is a major blow to us, as our site has one of the largest DVD ripping software collections on Earth. But the law is very clear with this one, tools like SmartRipper serve really only one main function -- ripping copy-protected DVDs -- and are therefore illegal from 1st of January, 2006.
4. Other site areas
* No changes. Stuff like glossary, FAQ section, etc will continue operating as they do now.
it's too early for me to wade thru that lot but all i'm saying is that too much ripit4me discussion here at AD (whether or not it falls into the abovre Finnish regulations) may well bring too much attention to AD being as virtually nowhere else seems to be able to even mention it's name...

I was just at DD and found it hard to beleive they removed Shrink. They had a nice selection of versions. With Decrypter, with ImgBurn and the ripper free one.

We never stop learning.

cheers jan, as always, stated in better detail than me :)

all i'm saying is let's be careful how much discussion goes on here, i can't speak for the Admins on the subject, earlier on i just though of the Finnish law side of things so i wrote my previous post; i'll find out what the Admins take on this is.
