Good point PeeEssPee - I think the ps1 or psx did call it that. I guess it's Sony trademark name instead of dashboard.

Hi,
I'm new to this and in need of some help. I have read lots of forums and am still a bit stuck as I dont want to brick my machines.
I have a PSP phat (V3.52) and Slim (V3.71).
Now before I get ripped off at the computers fayres, I need to know the following;
1) How to update OFW to CFW - I beleive this is done in stages? But what is the 1st stage for me on the above machines? All I can see is 1.50 > 2.71 :( > 3.03 > 3.40 OE > 3.52 M33 > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.71 M33 > BRICK > 1.50 > 3.40OE > 3.52 M33-4 > 3.71 M33-2. Do I have to downgrade OFW before I can upgrade to CFW?
2) Do I definately need to purchase pandoras battery - As I can get them done at the above for 20GBP each with games? But don't want to get ripped off.
Any help on the above mattetrs will be MUCH appriciated.
Thanks,

Thanks,
1) First you need to make a Pandora's Battery. Look around the forums, theres bound to be one stickied.
2) If you haven't got Lumines, yes, because Pandora is the only way to downgrade.
Hope this helped.

Thanks PeeEssPee,
So I need to get a pandoras battery, then downgrade by applying the CFW;
But...
What CFW steps do I need to take if I was to downgrade the Slim (currently V3.71)
Thanks for any help you give?

Okay, you need to make a magic memory stick;
Here
EDIT: I forgot the option of hardmodding your battery. I doubt that option UNLESS you are very desperate.
Good luck.

Are you still updating this guide? Cos there are a few terms I'd like to know that aren't there from what I can see. What is...?
1. Devhook 0.46
2. Nand backup
3. Kernel
4. the difference between OE-A and m33
Just those for now. =)

DevHook (Or Device Hook) was the predecessor to custom firmware, it was a program that ran from official firmware 1.50 to emulate a higher official firmware. This was so that newer features could be accessed and games requiring a higher firmware update could still be played from 1.50. Development stopped at the emulation of 3.03 because of the massive uptake of custom firmware.
NAND Backup is the process of backing up the complete NAND of the PSP (The flash chip that contains IDKeys, flash0 to flash5, among other things)
Kernel is the first thing that loads up when you turn the PSP on, it governs the overall operating system, it is also something which homebrew requires to be able to operate, if you have the wrong kernel for a certain homebrew that it can't run. This is a problem in Slims; 1.50 kernel can't run on Slims yet, so any homebrew that's based around the 1.50 kernel can't run on them.
OE and M33 are simply different "generations" of custom firmware, DarK_AleX has created them both, M33 is newer and better than the OE firmwares.
PSP, all the way from 1.00 to 5.50 GEN D2 - DS Lite w/ M3DS Real (M3 Sakura v1.34)
PS3 3.01 - iPod Touch 2G 16GB Jailbroken - Xbox 360 60GB - PC, Q6600, 3GB DDR2, GTX260 (216) 896MB

@Shokz
That's awesome, thanks. A little PSP history lesson... hehe. So is DevHook still popular cos I see that term a lot? Would it provide any benefits for someone like me who's running 3.80m33-5 with 1.50 add-on on Phat? Or do the modern CFWs cover everything that devhook used to do?

No, these days there's nothing special to DevHook that can't be done on custom firmware, it was a brilliant program in its day, but now custom firmware's surpassed it.
