im just checking if this is what u have said, im kinda confused here and there,
interpretion of what u have said(details):
step1: download the Officalsony v3.80 update & download the firm ware done by dark alex v3.80m33
step2: Copy the UPDATE folder into /PSP/GAME/
step3: RENAME the Offical version to 380.pbp(means the version done by dark alex does not need to be renamed?)- Run it, the update will be done by Sony updater. At the end when you are asked to reboot the PSP pressing X or O, do it.(means dark alex's firmware will automatically run by the offical one?- if it is is kinda nasty haha XD jkjk)
Ok I have firmware 3.52 m33-4, the 3.80 update claims it needs 3.52 m33-3 or higher. I am obviously using a higher version. My psp even says under system info 3.52 m33-4. The problem is every time I try to do the update, it tells me that the update requires 3.52 m33-3 or higher and rufuses to update. For some reason or another the updater does not think my psp is 3.52 m33-3 or higher. When quite clearly the PSP tells me otherwise. Any ideas?

Go to recovery menu (Turn off the PSP hold the R-Trigger down and then turn on the PSP). This should boot into the recovery menu.
Go to configuration and change the GAME folder kernel from 1.50 to 3.52 then exit out of recovery.
larry,
You rock......I am pretty tech savy but sometimes there is that one little thing that has you searching the net for hours. This was that one simple thing for me. I really appreciate it.

on a psp 3.80 --- no chance, you need custom firmware
