custom firmware is better than 1.5 if u don't want to do what tehjoker says

Omg... Devhook is OLD! Dont use that crap!!
Custom Firmware is like having a regular firmware of Sony but you can fully customize it your own way. You can play Backup games and PSX and other emulators. Basically read a guide about it cause there are tons of things you can do with CF 3.40OE-A
