I read somewhere that DirectX v10 is bacically something called as a 'Hardwer Abstraction Layer', which integrates itself into Windows Vista's 'kernel', which is completely rewritten, unlike the previous versions of Windows. I'm not pretending to understand what exactly that means -- in fact I don't.

My question being: Can DirectX v10 be modified and installed on Windows XP?

As it is, probably not, but hey, if enough folks refuse to buy that Vista cr@p and demand microsoft ports it to XP, perhaps it'll happen.

The_Fiend,
I've heard that MS has already made a PROFIT of 5 Billion USD in the sales of Vista. So as unfortunate as it may sound, people ARE buying it :(

Morph416,

The project plans to do this by building a converter that can take in a DX10 game executable and spit out a modified version that can be run on a (non-Vista) target OS. The target OS must be x86-based, which rules out the PPC version of OS X, since the converter doesn’t do any binary translation.
Does x86 mean 64-Bit? My current one's 32 Bit...

There have been some unconfirmed reports of a DirectX 10 wrapper, basically intercepting DirectX 10 calls and converting them to the DirectX 9 shader model. So far I haven't seen anything released yet, even proof of concept code.

Although I have vista, this sounds pretty interesting.
