Would I be able to access other network drives from my PS3 if I install Yellow Dog Linux?

Is it possible? Yes. Is it possible for you? Maybe. It all depends on your knowledge of Linux, networking, and filesharing.

You can use Red Kawa File server to access files on your PC from your PS3.

I have read that it is possible to backup blueray movies on the PS3 through a linux command. In order to not take up too much space on the PS3 hard drive I would transfer the files to one of my network drives. I would rather not have to buy an external usb hard drive as additional storage. I have a network attached storage device where I house my movies and music.

SAK (Swiss Army Knife) has the ability to dump ISO's directly to a network drive, I'm not sure if it needs the network to be setup in a specific way or anything as I'm yet to try it (waiting for a USB keyboard).

You can get a USB to standard keyboard converter, if you have a standard keyboard, may be cheeper.
