If you have a 5.1 multichannel output on your dvd player, is that going to give you better sound quality than the digital optical out?

Hello gutpitino ... welcome to afterdawn. Finally, someone with the smarts to ask that question! So many people think that the optical or coax sound will be so much better with that "digital" buzzword thrown in and that just isn't the case. If both your DVD player and your receiver have the six multichannel outputs/inputs, then by all means connect them; I know its a lot of added cables but its well worth it. A good 75% of the movies you watch will be better with the digital outputs but the sound and effects of more high budget movies are a lot better with the 5.1 multichannel. A lot of movies don't put a lot of effort into the 5.1 because its much more expensive but with the bigger budget moview, they put a lot of effort into having the six totally independant sound tracts to deliver the maximum in sound effects. So YES, its well worth connecting even if you'll play the majority of movies in digital. When you have it connected, try movies like Saving Private Ryan ... you'll be awed at the sound ... the first fifteen minuits are a no holes barred action scene and the sound will take your breath away in 5.1 multichannel ... the newer Star Wars movies will do the same. Its well worth connecting if your DVD player and amp have that capacity.
