I have a slim ps2 with a flip top, I want to hook up a USB external HDD and use USB Extreme, would it have any slow load/save times? or would it work just as fast as a regular fat ps2 with the HDD Adapter thanks!

it actually goes slower then a cd lol
Unless you get a really high speed hdd then maybe it will go the same speed as a cd?
Also game compatibility sux for usbextreme.
Internal hdd owns usb hdd anyday.

What do you need the fliptop for? Do you have swap magic?
If you want to boot hdloader without swappaing swap magic with a backup then you can stick hdloader.elf on a usbstick and boot up swap magic. If configured right and usb stick compatible then it will boot hdlodear up no swaping at all.

what you need:
-playstation 2
-hdd in there somewhere
-swap magic [i know v3.6 works]
-a usb 1.1 drive [NOT usb 2.0, that's too fast for the ps2 since it has usb 1.1 ports]
-hdloader elf [same as hdadvance, but smexier]
1. get an hdloader elf file from sksapps.com.
2. rename the elf [should be like: "hdloader****.elf"] to "SWAPMAGIC.ELF". [i'm not sure if caps are necessary or not...]
3. place the elf file onto the usb drive and plug it into the ps2.
4. boot the ps2 with swapmagic inside.
5. ~should be working by now~
the hardest part is finding a usb drive that works.

nintenut:This is going to sound a bit odd, but it works, put your lips around the trigger and blow really hard, it works.

nintenut: Put your mouth on it and blow, gets the dust out, and sounds obscene!

okay heres what I have:
I have the fat ps2, with a 120gb HDD and the adaptor on it. This HDD is used by my friend who uses HDA but his disc broke so he is letting me borrow it.
anyway, I have swapmagic 3, my Ps2 does NOT have a flip top. I downloaded the .elf from sksapps.com and renamed it to "SWAPMAGIC.ELF" and put it on my jump drive. I booted up my ps2 with swap magic but it didnt do anything, it just sat there onthe main SM3 screen. I heard the jumpdrive I use IS compat but i dunno, its a Dane-Elec 256mb stick.. yeah its USB2 but I heard its compat.
what am I doing wrong?

oh yeah, it needs to be inside a folder named "SWAPMAGIC".
/edit: flip tops are not needed since you can backup your game onto the hdd using hdloader with the open/close button, or you could put backups on the hdd using winhiip on the pc [with the hdd connected to the pc of course], orrrrrrrrrrrrrr... you could open up the ps2 with a slide tool and swap out for backups from a legit game.
also i recommend you use ulaunchelf as swapmagic.elf since you can launch other elf's from there.

still not doing anything.. it just sits at the menu screen of Swap Magic.. it doesnt list the load program or anything, just the splash screen...
what now?? Do I need to have my jumpdrive formatted a certain way?

everything looks ok. Is it format to fat32? Try that if it isnt. If not the case, then all I can think of is the usb stick.

just for future reference I used an MP3 player to copy the files to my PS2.. (its a Sapphire Ivory) It worked just like a mem stick and then I copied the needed files to my PS2 mem card so I didnt have to use the MP3 player anymore.
