Help! Winsock issue...

Over the weekend, I lost my internet connection. It was up and running just smoothly and then all of a sudden, my browser (Firefox or explorer) couldn't connect to the server. I did a system restore but it was unsucessful. I swapped my modem for a new one. I even bought a new ethernet card and installed it.
After a few hours later with a Comcast Technician, they determined that it had something to do with a 'Winsock" such as a bad ip address starting with a 169. that the computer won't let go even after executing a 'netsh r w c' in DOS.
I would appreciate it if anyone can help me fix this issue or correct the winsock issue.

If you have Windows XP, try WinSock XP Fix.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database of your WinSock. Unzip, run the program, make a backup of your registry fix using the ReG-Backup button, then click Fix and reboot.

Simple way to do it is to select Run in that Start Menu, in the Run window type regedit and then click OK. RegEdit will open and right-click on the "My Computer" entry at the top, then select Export. Give the file a name, chose a place to save it, then click OK. It will prolly take a minute to save the whole registry file, so wait until your mouse's hourglass turns back to normal to indicate that the registry file is saved.
Then run WinSock XP Fix, click the "Fix" button, follow any instructions if they are given, and reboot your computer. Hope this helps:)

Thanks but even after using WinSock Fix XP, I still can't get a connection. BUT....if I go into safe mode (which I am now) I can get a good connection.
Which made me think that it might be a software issue and even a certain type of program that is preventing the browser from getting through to the modem. I removed McAfee and any other recent programs that may be the cause of the problem and still, I can't get a connection.
Right now, my security is Trend Micro PC (and it is still installed) and the only other update that I've done recently is installing Windows XP SP 2.
Any suggestions on how to repair my internet connection again in normal mode w/o having to do a format and re-install Windows?

Alright, I'm going to need a little info here to see what might be going on here:
Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:
Type the following command:
IPCONFIG /ALL
Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

Huh, alright, on the non-working machine do the following, so I can hopefully zero in on the problem:
Start -> Run -> Type cmd and press enter
At the command prompt type ipconfig /release and press enter. When it is finished type ipconfig /renew. Once that is done, it may take a few seconds, type ipconfig /all and post all your results.

IP address and Default Gateway are not in the same range.
Your IP address is 76.17.210.213, the Default Gateway is 76.17.208.1 and I would have expected it to be 76.17.210.1
Is the working pc part of the same network as the non-working one?
Either way post an IPCONFIG /ALL for the working pc.
Then try this on the non-working one:
Unplug the Cable Modem and leave it without power for two or three minutes. This is important so that it releases the association between the existing connection and the IP address that it has allocated to it.
Plug back the Cable Modem and wait until it is fully booted (four steady lights), then boot the PC. The modem should recognize a new connection and allocate a new IP address to it, which should then let you get online, hopefully.

I only have one computer and I'm currently now in safe-mode (its the only way to get the internet up and working). In the normal mode, I can't get an internet connection.

One thing you might try....is first, since you were using an onboard NIC chip....remove it from the Device Manager (uninstall it). Then, upon reboot, go into your BIOS and disable it.
That way, you're only dealing with the NC100 card.
Repeat the steps to uninstall the NC100's drivers. Reboot. Then reinstall. Just incase there were any interference between the two.

I removed the NIC card and disabled the onboard LAN card. The only card left is the NC100.
still, I can't get the internet working in normal mode. What could be causing or preventing the connection?

I finally found what the problem was. Trend Micro Security's firewall was preventing the connection. After disabling it, I was able to get a connection! Now, I'm just using Window's firewall.

That's not right though. Trend Micros firewall shouldn't have been doing that. I half wonder if it was blocking some malicious progrma from connecting and in the process slowed/terminated your connection.
