Hey everyone, I'm a first time poster and I'll admit I don't know much about computers. Right now I'm trying to download the movie Underworld off of Kazaa (I've already seen it twice in theatres, so I've paid my dues). Nevertheless, every download appears with no image and no sound, yet the time bar is moving. Here are the strange filenames that appear from the search on kazaa lite (they're all an hour and 2 minutes, which isnt the length of the movie and they don't specify a first or second half)
<<<list of various releases of movies >>>
Needless to say it goes on like this. There are also some smr files. I don't really know what all of that stuff means, but I already have the DivX 5.0.2 Pro and an SMR Divx Codec. How do I play these movies? I've downloaded nearly all of them and I get nothing.
The one anomaly was this file:
<<< Anomolous Filename >>>
at least that one says part 1 of 2, typical to movie downloads off kazaa. It also was lenght of 60 minutes, rather than 1 hr 2 minutes as all the others.
Anyways, THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help and if you even took the time to read through all that crap. I really appreciate your help.
EDIT: Avoid placing exact names and such of pirated material in your posts.

Although Ive never seen anyone get their accounts frozen for breaking this rule, its best that you follow it. :-)
Now onto your problem. It seems as though all those movies are avis and barring that any of them are fake, you might be in need of the right video codec. Now you state that you have the divx 5.02 codec which might be fine if the movies were encoded with that codec or a version before that. Unfortunately, for you, some of these movies might have been encoded with newer versions of the divx codec. Fortunately for you, you can upgrade free of charge.
http://www.divx.com
Also, download GSpot and load the movies that don't play into the program to find out which codecs you will need. Not all videos will work with only the divx codec. Some might have been encoded with another codec, mainly XVID.
Since you seem to be in the business of downloading movies, you should download FFDShow and use that to playback your movies, since it supports a wide variety of codec and can save you the time of having to download codecs left and right.
Good Luck.

I tried to play some of the videos with the new Divx player, and the warning said
the video contains unknown data: FourCC code "0"

FourCCs of "0" usually means youve got a fake file. The divx player was unable to find the four character code within the movie's video stream which would relate it to a codec which would be able to play it.
If you run the file in GSpot you will get a similar error of 0.
If you run a working AVI file into GSpot you will most likely get a FourCC of DX50 or XVID.
DX50 corresponds with the divx codec while XVID does the same with an xvid codec.

I've had the same problem as iohaus, and I also get no audio or video. I have downloaded the latest divx from thier site, and I've tried it on two different computers. I've also used g-spot, and verified that it's a 5.0 divx codec that is used to encode it. It says the files size is fine, and there is no audio channel. I'm beggining to think that it wasn;t encoded right, or just is fake. But what I can't understand is why would you bother making a 500 meg file fake, and multiple people making fake files named different things. Doesn't seem worth the bandwidth or the time.

I have been having the same problems when trying to get Underworld. In fact, with many movies. I've tried a couple different files off Kazaa (which I know is probably unreliable anyway) and I get the black screen with no audio. In one file, the DivX logo faded in, then out in the bottom right corner, but nothing happens after that. If you want to preview the AVI thats not completely downloaded, just make a copy of the download file, and change the file extension to AVI. Usually windows media player will open it then. I'm not really sure what to do now. Should I get Edonkey??? I've heard that it's more trustworthy...

DIVX player works fine, and after further research using g-spot, I've fond that under the file details is stats that only about 12-15 megs of it are actually movie, and the rest is garbage, but it isn't stated as "junk" in thier database system. I've also found that there is no audio enbedded into the file. I would recommend that everyone who has this problem delete thier copies to prevent further contamination. I have about 3 gigs invested worth of blank movies. I would recomend winMX. I got my copy of the Screener last week and its only like 300 megs for the whole movie, which is very bad quality. E-mule might be another alternative, but I've only been using it for a few days now and it seems hard to get anything worth-whial off of it.

I'd like to answer the one about WHY someone would create a bogus blank 700meg movie.
Kazaa is a file-sharing program, as such it has the ability of sharing files based upon the generosity of others. In this, you must have files to share files. The more files you have that other people are downloading from you, the more "points" you get towards doing downloads yourself.
Thus, some people cheat by running a 2-hour vidcam on a wall or put an entirely different movie in it's place. Check carefully.
I highly recommend Shareaza above-board all the other file-sharing programs. It does not place any restrictions upon file-sharing and goes with the good intention that no-one will cheat nor do they need to to download files.
Further, they have a media preview that does a very intelligent movie-view of an incomplete file so after 4-5megs you can be certain it is what you want before you stake out 700megs of it.
Shareaza also allows you to post a comment beside each file so by other honest users' opinions, you can see what the file is before you download the first byte of it.
No, I don't work for Shareaza but I sure do like them ! :)
Enjoy.

Hi UK_Mewz:
It's not very good.. Like 2-3k/sec and I'm on Cable internet, but my experience with all I could find,
Kazaa, Kazaa-Lite, BearShare, Mule, Donkey, and some others, they just weren't very good, or were Spyware or restricted downloads by requiring uploads to occur first.
Shareaza is written by an individual, Freeware, and has updates coming in quite often it seems, much like my own project. :)
You'll just have to try it out to see if it's right for you. Unless something better surfaces, that can preplay a DiVX movie before it is fully downloaded, and allows other users to post comments on it, I'll stick with Shareaza.
The final downloads are good too, not mention them here but the search engine is good and comprehensive.
Sincerely,

Yes they are fake! They are purposefully placed in the kazaa matrix to flood the system with BS files in order to accomplish exactly this! Silly people continue to leave them in their shared folder and perpetuate the mess.
Yes, 5% of all P2P usernames are plants from the RIAA. Just look for high bandwith downloads with time sigs that dont make sense.

Well to be honest I don't care. I found my Screener :)
I found it by going to packetnews.com and searching for it. You need MIRC installed and once connected you can goto edit-paste and it will tell you what to type, just hit enter. It's on a queue basis, so it might be best at night. Its awesome to get anything.

Apparently eDonkey isn't as free of fake files as people have led me to believe. I let it run for a night to download a copy of an Underworld Screener, and I (as well as other people who were hoarding along with me)got what turned out to be the exact same copy as I got off Kazaa. No picture, no audio. Some people have said that they got the same file and it still didn't work with the absolute newest verssion of DivX or windows media player. G-Spot ays that about 90% of the space on the file is
"garbage". I might try eMule, but all I can do is hope for the best.

Hi Strix & Co.:
Remember that Shareaza has the ability of previewing a DivX movie before it's fully downloaded. Will save a ton of time, and you can rate it if you cancel early, it'll ask why and broadcast it to others who come across the same file.
Hope This Helps !

Come on folks, get real with what's going on. The MAN (mpiaa) loaded all those bogus files, I know, just for fun I checked K-lite the day before release of Underworld and saw the most files I've ever seen for any new release, it's obviously a trend, cause it works. Let's stick to legal use of P2P's; porno, shareware etc ;p

y is everyone ramping and raving about the whole preview facility that is a common feature now
even with kazaa lite
your gonna have to convince me with the speed and it doesn't lok too pleasing
OVERNET IS THE BEST!!!!!!!
and for all those searching for newly released items please dont go and download it the day is comes out
its probably a 99.9% chance its not the thing ur after
and even if it is your not gonna get a print u'd like to keep
pointless time and bandwidth if u ask me
remain calm and wait a little longer til its comes out and a few DVD screeners get posted on

Hi UK_Mewz:
* Well, I'm not sure I got Overnet to work right .. I brought it up again this morning and searched for something simple like "Kim Possible" and while it brings up a lot of music and audio, it brought up zero videos for format "ANY."
I got 22 movies listed with Shareaza.
In attempting to download a song from Overnet, I get no activity of any kind.
Further Overnet is ad-ware, the expected version to use is commercial, and it just didn't seem to nab a file at all when I did it.
We all have our favorite share-programs UK_MEWZ, but I think I'll stick with 100% Freeware Shareaza which lets you know WHAT the status of a download is if it doesn't start immediately, and has movie/audio/picture preview, and no running ad windows.
A fast download share-program is great, but I'd prefer one that gives me a constant 1k/sec rather than one that might give me 10k/sec if the circumstances are correct. :)

XDCC Catcher and IRCSpy.com are much better...
The only problem is that nobody seems to have an Underworld movie with a decent sound recording - it's almost like they decided to put mic and headphone volume at the maximum levels...
Bloody sucks...

* One solution for audio would be to extract it manually and use Soundforge to raise the volume of it and then re-encode it with VideoDubber.
I've had to use VideoDubber for several videos that were messed up in one way or another and while it doesn't have an auto-audio volume adjustment >P it does have many clean-up filters for videos, and it's 100% Freeware as well.

dw817:
There is a reason Onet isnt as fast as kazaa their ilk. Overnet is based on the eDonkey network and those files offer reliability rather than proliferation. If you want speed and reliability, try IRC out. Until then Onet is arguably amoung the top few P2P apps that are worth considering.
