You see, I use kazaa to download some of the shows that are not showing in a series yet, and when I do sucsessfully download them, half of them are Xvid. Well i'm a complete and totall idiot when it comes to things like decoding and such, All I know is that I cant play the show, and well, its a waste of space. Anyone have suggestions so I can watch in peace? Or am I doomed to listen to audio?

Download GSpot and load the movies into it. Itll tell you which video codec you need to install to watch the movies. Since you say most of them are xvid movies you could download an xvid codec, or to save you the trouble of having to find the newest stable release or whatnot you can just install FFDShow. Itll take care of almost all codec problems you might have since it can decode content that have been encoded by a wide range of codecs including xvid.

I'm somewhat in the same boat...here's the deal.

ISSUE: I downloaded some TV shows in this format - DVDRip_XviD-SFM.AVI (this is the extension after the file name of course). I need advice in copying to DVD media for use in home DVD player.

GOAL: To encode/move/burn/whatever these TV shows to my DVD Recorder so my wife and I can watch the shows on our home DVD player.

Please let me know how this is done, what apps I need or whatever help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Personally I haven't done this sort of conversion since I dont have a dvd burner but I can point you out to some guides which can help you out:
http://www.dvdrhelp.com/guides?tools=&madeby=&formatconversionselect=AVI+to+DVD&osselect=&howtoselect=%3B&search=Search+or+List+Guides

Note that you will have a loss of quality. How much depends on the quality of the original file. If you're willing, you could invest in purchasing a dvd player which supports the mpeg-4 video. This is the format in which avis are encoded to. You can find players as cheap as 140 dollars. Advantages of buying such a player is that you can watch your avis on your television without having to purchase a tv-out card or having to re-encode your avis into a format that can be accepted by your current dvd player. If you would like to purchase one in the near future, you should take a look at this DVD Compatability Guide as a reference:

Good Luck.

Both LiteOn and KISS Technologies produce standalone DVD players capable of playing DivX/XviD movies. KISS makes the KiSS DP-500 DVD (http://www.kiss-technology.com/templates/side.asp?level=1&pid=411) and LiteON has the LITEON LVD-2002 (http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/lvd_2002_2.htm) and the LITEON LVD-2001 (http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/lvd_2001_2.htm).

Thank you for the advice. I got some great links and plenty of reading material. I guess I'll give it a whirl. The stand alone player that plays muliple fomats sounds pretty sweet; I'll put this on my Christmas list. But I'd still better try these conversion techniques, or I'll never learn.
