hi all i have just joined this website my first question is do i really need a mod chip to play ps2 games i have downloaded and burned my self and how easy are they to install thanks all

No a mod chip is the best option, but there are other ways. And unless you have very good soldering skills and a steady hand i do not suggest you try installing it yourself. Also make sure if you get a mod chiptht you do some research first. Cheaper is not better when it comes to mod chips.

other methods you can use:
1. Swap Magic and a slidecard (old fat model only)
2. Swap Magic and a fliptop case (also fat model)
3. Swap Magic and Magic Keys II (slim model)
4. Swap Magic and a fliptop replacement (slim model)
these are cheaper methods you can use and require very little skill to install. But they do not perform all the functions that a good mod chip will.

so all i do is buy magic keys and swap magic and the games i burn my self will work is it that easy?

yep, that easy. The Magic Keys II stop the sensor when you open to swap from resetting the console. And swap magic tricks the PS2 into thinking you are using original games.
Now all you have to do is learn about good quality media
what programs to burn with
how to back up games
DVD+-R VS DVD-R
Booktyping
Outdated burner firmware
burning speeds
rebuilding ISO's (required so some games work with Swap Magic, not required on mod chips)
Ripping DVD9 down to DVD5 (also only required for Swap Magic)
and probably a few things i forgot.
