Trouble Connecting to XBOX Live

I recently got a hold an Xbox 360 and was hoping to use it mainly for use online, but I can't get it connected to the Xbox Live service. I was intending to get an official wireless adapter but thats out of the question for a while, so I instead got a long crossover cable as I'd been told that it was possible to hook my 360 up using my PC instead.

My PC connects to the internet wirelessly as there are two PC's in my house altogether, one being downstairs along with the wireless router whilst mine is upstairs along with the 360. I hooked my 360 up to my pc using the cable and ran the connectivity tests, it fails on the IP address part and this is where I am stumped. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it, I posted something about it on the Official Xbox Forums but I'm yet to get any kind of advice. Thanks
