I recently purchased my friends PSP for 50 dollars and it is currently running on 2.7. Ive tried downloading the eboot and placing it in psp/game/update and then putting it under the UPDATE file but it keeps saying corrupted data on PSP any help would be much appreciated

I don't how exactly you did. But if you are new to psp, I suggest you follow the instructions step by step.
