Locking Hard Drive?

Is it really neccessary to lock the hard drive when upgrading? I mean does that just get me on live, or will it not boot up without it locked.

I know certain hard drives are not lockable, but if I were to just go to the store and buy one, what are the odds its not going to work. I looked at the list and there is probably a thousand that have been tested to work, so I am wondering what my odds are.
