can not get hdd to work on slimline

I have a dms4 lite and a usb hdd. I formatted the hdd and loaded a game on it but when I plug it into the ps2 I get a black screen. I am using toxic bios 1.3 and told it to boot from devolution hdd And get nothing. My laser is burned out so loading by disc will not work. are their any options or is there something else I can do.

I also used usbextreme or advanced to formatt the drive and load the games. What good is a hdd option on a mod chip if it will not read the hdd.
