DVDLab Pro is an authoring program, not an encoder.

IMO, to get the best results, you have to do the steps separately. The best encoder that I've used is ProCoder.

I think winavi video converter is what you are looking for. It has free trial version, you may try that.

I use DVD Flick; it converts the .avi and burns it using ImgBurn. It's pretty fast too: +/- 90 minutes from .avi file to a DVD that I can watch on my home player....
I've used it over 50 times (maybe over 100, who knows) and I've NEVER had a bad disc, NEVER!!! And DVD Flick is so easy, it's almost idiot proof. A how-to guide is available if anyone is interested here: http://beginwithsoftware.com/videoguides/dvd-flick-guide.html This is a very basic guide aimed at beginners. There are more advanced options available once you know what you're doing; but this basic guide is all I've needed to author perfect DVD's from .avi files. You can download DVD Flick from here:http://sourceforge.net/projects/dvdflick/ or from here: http://www.majorgeeks.com/DVD_Flick_d5530.html
Check it out!!! You'll like it!!
