im going to try that Run Linux (Fedora Core 5) tutorial but i was wondering after installing linux do i still have access to the XMB? is so how?

Yes you can, either by typing a particular command at the Linux bootloader or you can just hold the PS3 On button until it beeps. Using the second method also wipes all other XMB settings (not files).
