anyone know how to use AVID?

i wont to do some video editing with avid. color correction etc.
the import file is an avi and it is about 700mb with divx codec

i know that i can re encode the avi with the avid codec but it leaves it uncompressed and that makes it about 16gb and then in avid it renders it to an .omf which is also huge gb

so is there an easier way to all of this?
