backing up one of my movies.... when dvd fad decryptor is done the files i have is a DVD-8 so im using DVD Shrink to shrink it to fit a normal DVD4.7 . so, like half way thru the INCODING video stage my computer just turns off! everytime.... i then went to deep analyse video... same thing half way thru crashes and i dont get any kinda error or nothing, it just shuts off...

my question is: Is there a way i can see some kind of a log file to see what went wrong....

and its not just this certain video.... its doing it on all the vids i try to backup now......

toshiba labtop Centrino 1.6GHz 512 RAM.. WinXP SP2

any help would be GREATLY appreciated... thanks

Shrink and encoding are pretty cpu intensive so the shutting down could be a heat issue.
When the last time the inside of the pc was cleaned out? If it's dusty that can cause the pc to overheat and shut down.

Multitasking? If you are - don't and close any unneeded programs.

Do a disc defrag recently? If you haven't do a defrag. Ripping dvd's can really fragment a hard drive.

Virus scan recently? Again if not run one.

Run a registry cleaner if you haven't recently. Here's a good free one - ccleaner. Use the issues and cleaner options.

Check and make sure all your drives are in DMA mode and not PIO mode. Here's a guide.

thats what i'm thinking too

@derek420,
Are you using some kind of cool pad or anything like that to help keep the laptop cool

you can DL a program called SpeedFan to see if your CPU is overheating while using shrink

basically open speed fan before using shrink to see what the CPU temp is., if they havent changed it Temp #2 should be the temp of your CPU

Oops missed the laptop bit :) Txs 300bowler!

Ok forget opening up the laptop (unless you've done it before)
300bowler's program will show the temp.

You can also try blowing some compressed air around the vents - does get some dust out.

But yep like 300bowler said a cooling pad is (well imho anyhow) a must for laptops.

You really need a coolpad to set the Laptop on. They are about $30.00 US and up.

As a quick fix, you might even elevate the notebook so air may circulate under it and place a simple fan blowing nice cool AC air around it. That might help the heat problem until you can get a cool pad.
