DVD+r or DVD-R for v14 ps2 slims????

i want to know about the media for using ps2 backup for my v14 ps2 slim...(modded)-SCPH 75004
should i use DVD+R or DVD-R??some say that DVD-R can damage the laser in v14 slims!!i have once tried burning gta vc stor. in a dvd -r and worked fine for 2 hours and from that onwards not working!!so im really confused what to do???and what are the best dvds for burnin can any1 help me plz??????

You should use DVD-R at all times, i wonder who told you to use DVD+R, you should use verbatmin and personally i have used philips DVD-R and over 80 games backed up and never a problem, also burn at max 2.4x speed and that way all games will work if you burn to fast you may get slow loading and gliches.

It should be able to read either one. But like above i always used DVD-R myself. And always 8X speed although they are hard to find in retail stores. I have used Philips, Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden and have had nothing but success.
I always burned backed them up and burned them with DVD Decrypter and set ti burn them at 4X on an 8X DVD (half the speed of the DVD's max spedd is the common rule of thumb when making a back up.) But i also set it at 4X the few times i used 16X
Most burners do this automatically. You can set DVD Decrypter to 1X all day, but if you watch the DVD Decrypter info window when it tells you what the ACTUAL burning speed was, it is usually right around 4X (mine always said 3.8)
If your burner can booktype a disc then DVD+R should work very well when you booktype it to DVD-Rom (DVD-Rom being the format that original games are in)
I buy all my media at reputable stores (online) my main choice being supermediastore.com because of the good prices, they have lots of free shipping deals, and they sell genuin Taiyo Yuden 8X Silver Thermal Laquer DVD-R (premium line) which i love. And i can get those for about the same price or less then people who buy crappy brands like TDK or Memorex in a retial store.

You would use DVD+R if you weren't even able to run a DVD-R on your slim PS2 like my v15 for example. As much as I want to use a DVD-R for its quality, cheap price and performance, my PS2's laser is quite picky so I have no real alternative for using anything else besides DVD+R for that matter. I've tried some Sony DVD-Rs, but I had no luck even booting a one gigabyte game and a few others before I had to give up after several tries and switch to some Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD+Rs. If you can use DVD-Rs, go for it. If you can't and must play your backed-up games like I've wanted to, then DVD+R is the only alternative you really have besides a no-no on using rewritable or a harddrive if you have the older generation of PS2s.

yes, PS2 lasers are known for being very picky.
Like i have a friend who only uses TDK. He has my old PS2 and the exact same chip i have. Yet mine will not play them without major audio/video problems. Yet i can take that same disc with the skipping problem, copy it to a Philips, Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden and it plays flawless. But my slimline will play either format just fine. The DVD+R i always booktype to DVD-Rom though.

Well so far I've only burnt two games (GTA: LCS and GTA: VCS) to Verbatim 16x DVD+R w/Lightscribe top using Nero at 8x speed and Booktyped to DVD-ROM and so far I haven't had any problems. Of course my Silver Slim PS2 has only been modded for 12 hours, but both games made it passed the loading screen and seemed to play nice and smooth!!

Yes, i have used the Verbatim Lightscribe a few times myself. Not often as they are a bit more expensive and lightscribing the pictures on them (if you use high quality settings) takes forever to do. And a DVD+R disc booktyped to DVD-Rom is about as compatible as a disc is ever going to get without being an original.

I have a much older version of the PS2 slim and I just recently got it modded. I had a hard time figuring out what blank DVDs should I use, especially since my PS2 slim is sort of picky. It is a major problem since most of the blank DVDs out there are 16x. I bought a pack of DVD-R 16x before and tried burning games on it, but when I tested it out on my PS2 it loads the game but it loads really slow and there are always constant skipping. My friend has a much more newer version of the PS2 slim then mine and he had his modded 2 years ago and his PS2 works fine with the DVD-R 16x. Someone on the forum suggested to me to use DVD+R, luckily I had a spare Maxwell DVD+R 8x, I tested out the game out and it loads fine with no skipping. Of course the best brand to use is Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim so I bought a small pack of Verbatim DVD+R 16x and burnt the game again to test it out, but... it reacted the same way as it did when I burnt it on my previous DVD-R 16x, so its pretty obvious that I can't play 16x DVDs. I'm starting to get tired of going through this trial and error process and I'm hesitating in purchasing Taiyo Yuden online since the site I found only sells them in a pack of 100, and I still haven't tested out a DVD-R 8x so I don't really know at this point whether I should buy the DVD-R or DVD+R of the Taiyo Yuden brand.The Maxwell DVD+Rs is holding on okay but there are some occasion where the PS2 won't recognize the disk and it takes a couple of resets to make it work. Will it really improve loading of the game if its burnt on a Taiyo Yuden brand?

if your in the US try supermediastore.com
they sell different pack sizes. I used pretty much 8X DVD-R for all of my back ups. The problem with the 16X may be your burning speed. If you set it real low, like 4X or below, it may just be too slow for a 16X disc. You may want to try 6X or even 8X burning speed with those since you already have some on hand. And i think Taiyo Yudens are the the top of the line when it comes to discs. watch what they are selling you thugh, TY has two classes. Premium line and Value Line. I always go for the premium. But i also would not buy 100 of any disc before i knew they would work. You can look for Verbatim in your local store or online as they should work just as well.
And i am sure it is not the "older" slimline that you have because mine is a V12 which is the first slimline model they made.

Well angel, you got a couple of decisions.
1. Will it really improve loading of the game if its burnt on a Taiyo Yuden brand?
It'll definitely improved your results if you switch to Taiyo Yuden. TYs are a very high quality DVD media brand, whether it's a DVD-R or DVD+R. When I gotten my Swap Magic set, I heeded the warnings of bad media and the praise I've heard about TYs and decided to get some when I had the spare cash. Since then, it's so hard going back to bad media for anything except using Memorex like the digital FAQ recommended -- 2nd hand distribution. I wanted something with an almost everlasting archival ability (at least until I get senile...). After comparing my testing results from that of Memorex and Sony to see if my softmod worked backed then and a nearly flawless burn identical to the original using TY, I made up my mind I'd still to TYs and Sonys too. Sony is okay since it's very convenient to get at a nearby store but if you can manage, pull through for some TYs, and you won't be disappointed. The only times I have had a bad burn I believe was because of my aged LITE-ON burner, which burnt 100s of Memorex, Fujifilm, Sonys and TDKs, cough up some hardware complications here and there. Updated my firmware like people suggested and haven't had a bad burn since except if they're Memorex...

A rule of thumb is to not use 16x or RWs at all suggested here in this forum in the sticky. 16x are only exceptionally good for me when I'm using Sony D21s testing my multi-game compilation. They have a higher boot rate than Memorex and the results of Sonys are nearly identical to TYs, but TYs provide much more higher probability of the game working very well throughout the game compared to what you can get at your nearby stores like Memorex (unless you're EXTREMELY lucky not to get CMC MAGs; however, if you look hard enough, you can still find some Riteks, Verbatims and even Taiyo Yudens at Frys or Sam's Club if you look hard enough (I forgot).
3. The Maxwell DVD+Rs is holding on okay but there are some occasion where the PS2 won't recognize the disk and it takes a couple of resets to make it work.
Maxells are considered good. Have an even better burner can help results too, with an updated firmware and a good burning program.
4. I still haven't tested out a DVD-R 8x so I don't really know at this point whether I should buy the DVD-R or DVD+R of the Taiyo Yuden brand.
If you really want to play and have gotten DVD+Rs to work, then I say go grab at some TY 8x DVD+Rs. If you want to wait and settle down patiently until you test out a quality DVD-R disc to work on your slim PS2 nearly flawlessly, I say give it shot for the DVD-Rs. If I an option to use DVD-Rs, I'd definitely do it if you're comparing quality i.e. TY DVD-Rs with TYs DVD+Rs, and DVD-Rs are relatively cheaper than DVD+Rs if you're on a budget. Since you have a v12 like steimy has claimed (don't know the oldest version of the slimline, but I believe it is the v12 because I remember the v11 being a fatty though I don't recall so well...), get some DVD-Rs. They should work on your PS2. If they don't, you could always use the remainder for backing up other things.
