Hi, I'm new to this forum, but the person who said to use divx for only the pc didn't mention what I recently discovered. For about $150 including shipping, you can get a decent standalone dvd/divx/svcd player. I have not had ONE divx that didn't play in this thing. It also recognizes divx files on DVD-R, but the video/audio are out of sync. It plays divx on CD-r with no problem. It also plays mp3's burned onto cd-r AND dvd-r! Imagine having 60 hours of music on one dvd-r disc that it will play. Just like a jukebox. So, the point is, if you get this next generation dvd player, it will play EVERYTHING. It even plays most things with an "mpg" extension, no conversion to vcd or svcd or divx required. My suggestion is if you don't know which is better, go with divx, because most next generation players will be able to play them. For instance, a divx encoded at 1150 kbps (the bitrate of vcd), you get svcd quality (2350 kbps) and if you encoded to fit 1 hour on 1 cd, it would be about 1450 kbps which makes it DVD quality. You can get this standalone divx player on ebay. Just type in "divx player" and make sure the seller is selling "Mecotek" brand divx player. Also, they have a 3 year warranty and email you back if you have questions or concerns in a very fast time.

Both LiteOn and KISS Technologies produce standalone DVD players capable of playing DivX/XviD movies. KISS makes the KiSS DP-500 DVD (http://www.kiss-technology.com/templates/side.asp?level=1&pid=411) and LiteON has the LITEON LVD-2002 (http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/lvd_2002_2.htm) and the LITEON LVD-2001 (http://www.liteonit.com/DC/english/lvd_2001_2.htm).
