Trouble Backing Up Paper Mario - ViperGC Extreeme USB

I tried posting this in a similar thread, but as that thread was old and I'm a noob it wouldn't let me do so. May not have been a good place for it anyway. So: My problem.

I have an original copy of Paper Mario 1000 Year Door, and I was attempting to make a backup. I have copied about 6 games so far with no troubles. I insert the disc and run CobraBackup as usual. It seems to be working fine when I hit FullBackup and lets me choose an .iso name. Then it pops up "Communication Error (RM) Cobra BIOS USB remote is not responding." (once it copied 2MB first, then displayed this message. If I attempt to hit FullBackup immediately after, it then says "Error: Couldn't connect to Viper USB Adapter"

I then attempted to just play the game normally, got to the title screen and then it would not play (I forget the message, something about look in the GameCube manual), so I proceeded to wipe off the game and attempt to play again - seemed to work OK then.

Tried to copy via Smart Backup, only to receive the same Error.

UPDATE: I just attempted to copy another game (a backup I already had) with the same result. Think I'll try reinstalling some drivers or something and see where that gets me. Anyone have a clue? Made successful backups of 1000 Year Door? *scratches head*
