My ps2 has an original infinity matrix chip installed. It worked for a good while no problem, then it started not loading back up games, which are all recorded on the lowest speed using verbatim.

It will load a back up game once in a blue moon now. Yet, it will load ps2 originals and ps1 originals NTSC or PAL fine...
what the hell is going on?

I want to fix this myself as it will cost a bomb for me to post it back to the guy who set it up.
Any advice?

could be the chip, so unless you have some good knowledge about them and how to install them i would have a REPUTABLE repair shop fix it.
