I recently ripped "Little Children" to the HD with DCD Fab Decrypter.
When I tried to compress with DVD Shrink, I got an error message saying the file was too big for one disk. I then ripped with DVD Decrypter and was able to compress.
I was only able to get 57.8%. My compression setting is at "custom" (4350 mb). Any suggestions on what I should do if compression falls below 60% to enhance it more?

Are you using the quality options in shrink?
Deep analysis?
AEC option?

these options will help with picture quality but will take longer.
Or if you dont mind not having menus then using the re-author mode in shrink will help compression.
Or you can insert a still image for the special features to help compression levels.

personally, i would go the option that LOCO gave,(seems like every backup i use DVD-RB instead of Nero recode2 now) the results or worth the money IMO.
but if you dont want to shell out the money here is how to insert a still image with shrink

BTW if you click on the link in shrink there are more pics online

I always use the re-author mode. I have used the deep analysis before and did not see a marked difference in the percentage, and like you said it takes so much longer.
I just discovered that DVD Rebuilder exists tonite. It looks very complicated. Is it a better engine than DVD Shrink? Is it faster?
Please advise..

Thanks 300bowler. I always copy the "main movie" only, no extras, no menus. I don't think this would help. Am I correct in this assumption? Would custom ratio help? Not very familiar with this feature.

Nice guide 10pin :D DVD-RB comes with it's own freeware encoders though...if you don't want to shell out the dough it can be free and still excellent.

It's not complicated at all, especially if using the installer it should be a no brainer...
Quote: Is it a better engine than DVD Shrink?
There are actually several different encoders to choose from...here is a link that makes a comparison between the different encoders and transcoders to help you decide which one looks best to you...

Quote: Is it faster?
No...it's actually up to 6x slower depending on your system specs, but the quality will be unmatched. I typically let it run over night while I sleep and you can also set up to batch encode.
A custom ratio will only help if you are keeping the menu and special features...you really won't have a reason to tweak the compression ratio if backing up the movie only in reauthor mode.

I backed up this movie using the Deep Analysis option in DVD Shrink. I can't remember exactly how much compression there was, but it was a full disc backup and this is what the movie looks like...

To everyone who gave advice, thanks so much! I'm still reading over the DVD Rebuilder guides. It may seem simple to those who use it, but initially I am overwhelmed by all the info. Is there really a big difference in quality between this engine and DVD Shrink? I looked at the still comparisons and couldn't really tell. It just doesn't look like there is a big enough difference in quality to make the switch. Any feedback on this?

I can see a difference...but to each his own. Try it once and see for yourself. And of course it isn't needed for all titles as the old standbys should handle most titles with low compression just as well.

essay55,
i can really tell a difference on my 65' tv, i also see a difference on my 27' tv too, but not as much as the big screen.
the good thing about dvd-RB is you can use the batch mode overnight when your sleeping.

Will build mode on IMGBURN work for a single layer DVD-R? If so, is there a guide how to do this? Thanks.

Thanks for all the advice. I like the feature of the batch mode. I will play around with DVD Rebuilder this weekend, If I come across problems, it is comforting to know there are those like you that are so willing to help!
