No sound in avi file after DVD2AVI

After using Smartripper to generate a VOB file of a specfic DVD chapter i find

1) the new VOB file plays in PowerDVD with sound - therefore OK

2) after using DVD2AVI, re-checking I'm using the right audio track number and with all sorts of options on Demux etc on the audio menu of DVD2AVI, I've not yet been able to create an avi file that plays (Media player 9) with any sound. Video is good, however.
The audio ripped with DVD2AVI into .ac3 and .wav files plays perfectly.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?
