Transferring VHS footage to DVD/computer

I have a high-end Inspiron laptop and want to copy all my vhs tapes to my computer and/or DVD. I originally thought of purchasing a DVD Recorder/VHS combo, but the conversion process to AVI format after the transfer may be lengthy. It was recommended that I buy an AverTV Cardbus Notebook TV Tuner/PVR. Any information on this card's reliability or are there any other suggestions for this process?

Inasmuch as some (commercial)VHS tapes use Macrovision and some DVD recorders honour it (to prevent recording).
If I was going with a DVD-VCR combo I would make sure that it either ignored Macrovision or the video output could be run through an 'Image Stabilizer' before it went to DVD.
The same applies to capture cards;some ignore it, others don't.

I use a DVD recorder and record the tape straight to DVD-RW.
I can then edit the the disk on the pc and resave to DVD-R.
