new drive or laser unit?

hi i have a oct 2005 360 never had problems untill now ,it makes a whell spin sound when disks starts up and stops ,like the laser is touching the disk.

its only been doing it 1 and half months and now has starting scratching the disks ( the famous ring makes all round the disks)

should i a. new drive unit or b. new laser unit

ps. with the new drive unit i have a ms25 and would purchase another ms25 rom, is it right i would nt have to spoof because its the same just make sure it reports as ms25,
