Im think im going to install the Crystal Chip 2.0 PRO SLE (is that the best one by crystal chip?) and on the specs of that chip it says its compatable with a USB HDD. So my question is does that mean i can plug the HDD strait into the ps2's usb port and play games and media off it?

yes, that is exacly what that means. But a few things to consider.
1. You have to download a program, i think it is called boot manager or something, in order to run those functions
2. If you have a fat PS2 you want to install an internal IDE hard drive instead as it is faster and has better game compatibility
3. Yes that is a very good chip, and should do everything you need. But you may need to download a few extras to do them all. they will all be free but you still have to get them. Things like SMS media player, Boot manager, possibly even USB Xtreme unless the chips firmware has a game loader/installer built in.
4. The PS2 has USB 1.0 and not the newer 2.0 so you may experience some slowdowns during cutscenes in a game, i was told gameplay was not effected though. Not sure about the movies and how well they would play.

I have a DMS4 Pro with a 250GB internal hard drive and i love it. Games load faster than from a disc, and it also keeps my discs in perfect condition not having to use them.

You would be wise to go with the CC2.0 SLE. Its IMO the best chip out right now with the best features and no bugs like the DMS4 is notorious for. You wont be able to play games from the USB but you will be able to boot homebrew apps and media and well as upgrade your chips firmware and Boot Manger. With the combination of the CC2.0 SLE and HDL which you can install the the CC2.0 SLE's cFlash you will have all the ability to boot games from an IDE HDD you have in your fat PS2. The current patched HDl is better then the DMS4's Toxic OS anyway.
