My first post so bear with me!

I've imported Rogue Galaxy from the US to play on my fat PS2 (old version). Well, it's for the wife cos she hasn't shut up about this game.

Can someone tell me what I need so I can play this? I've read on other threads about mod chips and zoneloaders and swap magics and I haven't got a clue what any of them are!

Excuse the noob and his stupidity!

Ok, you might as well check Tojikin's modchip FAQ in the hardware boot forum, but i will explain everything.

To play imports (games not from your country) or backups (burned games) you must use a modchip. A modchip is a tool that helps you play these games. There a few kinds of modchips:

Swap Magic

This a chip that is very easy to install because it is CD based. It is recomennded for begginers, such as you. It involves swapping the discs in different methods (dependes on your PS2 version) but as long as you change the discs without the console knowing (not pressing the eject button) it will work.

HDLoader

This method involves installing games into an HDD that could be installed to a PS2 (dependes on you PS2 version). It is cheap, and usually results in lower loading times.

Inferior Modchip

OK, modchip is the real thing. An inferior modchip is something that you must disassemble your PS2 to install it, thus voiding your warranty. It is very hard, if you are not skilled in it you can kill your PS2. That is why modchip installation services install them for you.

Memory Card Exploit

Since i've never researched this one, i do not know how it works. But i think it involves installing a file to your memory card, then using a PS1 game as a trigger disc which boots up the file. Then you use it to swap discs and play your game, like a home made swap magic. It is FREE, though tedious and not useful as other modchips.

But you are going to have problems with rogue galaxy, since it is DVD9 (dual layer) rather then DVD5 (single layer). All of the modchips listed here (except the inferior modchip) do NOT support DVD9. So you will have to resize and rebuild your game and then burn it. Hope this helps.

I'm probably going to go with the Swap Magic method, although the warranty is void on my PS2 anyway cos I tried to fix the laser a couple of months ago. Had the disc read error problem.

Being a complete noob how do I resize and rebuild the game?

There is a tutorial in the DVD backup forum in one of the stickied (bald printed) topics. You should also use quallity discs. What PS2 version you have? Since you have a fat PS2, i reccomned using quallity DVD-R. I personally use Sony DVD-Rs and have no problems with MOST of my games.

http://www.mod-chip.com/en/ps2version.htm

This is how you find your PS2 version.

And yes, verbatim discs are VERY good.

I checked that site and I've got an early version - either 1, 2 or 3; specifically my model number is SCPH-30003

you can try downloading a torrent file that has already been shrunk also. i did it for God of War 2 because that was a DVD9 game. usually torrent sites tell you the size of the file.

when i tried to backup gow2, it was like 7.5gb. i downloaded a torrent that was 3.97gb and it worked. also, the best media to use is taiyo yuden DVD-R for ps2 backups.
