I just received my 2nd batch of Ritek/ RiData 4x DVD-R. Got these from Supermediastore dot com. I was told that these were the G04's. The ? is that it took an hour to burn a movie again. When I started the process, using RecordNow Max the 5 second count down to begin burning indicated that it was at 4X. 45 mins later when I returned the process was still going. It just finished at an hour. I've upgraded to the latest firmware for my Sony DW-U12A. I watched the meter on RecordNow Max as the 5 second countdown started. After the process was 5% in, at 14 mins remaining, it then switched and it read that there was 58 mins remaining. In other words, it seems like the burn speed went from 4X to 1X. I don't understand what the problem is. I have had success burning at 2X with TDK's. This forum endorses Riteks, so please inform me on what I'm doing wrong? I have my DMA enabled and I upgraded my RecordNow Max 4.5 to the PX 408 engine-just to answer any potential ?'s on your part.

If you read around about Sony DVD-Burners, you'll find a lot of people having similar problems to you with getting the Sony to burn most DVD-/+R at 4x speed.
One suggestion i've seen is to update the firmware with a hacked LiteOn LDW 400D firmware (It's basically a version of your Sony burner)

See these 2 links for further information which may be of use to you. Hope it fixes your problem.

Thanks for the response. The info you sent was based on the DW-U10 and the DRU500a. I may be missing something, but I didn't see where the DW-U12A/DRU500ax would be improved with which software? I also was curious about my problem because it doesn't even burn these at 2X, whereas I've been able to burn at 2X WITH 2x DVD-R's.

The G04 I've tried (only 1) with the sony dru500 burned at 2x for me. I don't think there is a fix for this at all.

Get the G03's at 1x, which will burn at 2x on the sony.

DarkmanX, I suggest you re-read the links, carefully.

'The U10A, U12A,500a and 500ax are all basically the same drive, and the Firmware is interchangeable.'

'Ritek disks are more likely to write at 4x, but not guaranteed. My drive was happy on all firmwares with most RITEK G04, but wrote at 2x to a batch of Traxdata RITEK G04 disks. You may find that the 1.0d firmware helps you with these marginal disks. I could burn those Traxdata RITEK disks at 4x with 1.0d. Apparently 1.0d and 2.0e (?) deal with the calibration phase differently, which seems to give some benefit for marginal disks.'

This is from the Sony FAQ page. As i said, if you want to burn at 4x on 4x-certified media, it's worth a try experimenting with the suggestions on those websites. Or do as other unsatisfied Sony owners have done, get a Pioneer ;)
