has anyone else ever played a backup only to have it display in black & white, or mostly black & white with odd discoloration? It's happened with a couple of backups I've burned and I'm just trying to figure out wether it's the file, the burner, or the media.

Well it depends. Are you trying to play a PAL game with an NTSC PS2 console? Some TVs are known not to display PAL region stuff correctly like my old Sony TV. Try another TV and see how it goes.

the TV is a 2 year old phillips HDTV. I've played at least one PAL backup with no color issues, but the two I'm having issues with are also PALs, thanks for the insight. I'll try them on a different TV tomorrow. I happen to be using memorex 16x dvd-r's which I found out only AFTER I bought them are really bad for ps2 backups, but I have a 50 pack of Verbatim 8x DVD+R's on the way from amazon and won't be burning anything else until they get here.

You can convert your games to NTSC.

And what PS2 version you have? use DVD-Rs for fat ps2 and +Rs for slim.

mine's a fat SCHP-30001 R (version 5). lol will the DVD+R's be ok with it? because if not I just spent money on yet another inappropriate stack, and the whole idea behind modding my ps2's was to have my gaming habit be
less of a burden on my already tight finances, lol

Allways use DVD-Rs for fat ones. If you use DVD+Rs they will result in crappy gameplay. And make sure you are using quallity discs.

depends what model you have really, some will play DVD+R just fine, or at least they should if you burn them correctly. any model above a V4 should play them. If you want the best results then having a burner that can booktype the DVD+R to DVD-Rom will greatly improve your chances for success. I have used both DVD+R and DVD-R in both 8X and 16X speeds. And with a good burner and booktyping (along with good quality DVD's of course) there should be no reason why they do not work.
