SD Card not Recognized by XP SP2

Hi,

My dad has a Sanyo HD camcorder that records on to SD cards.

He has two SD cards - the 512mb that came with the camera and also an 8GB which he purchased independantly.

Both cards work fine through the camcorder and when the camera is hooked up to the plasma they both work/play back fine fine.

However; we seem to be having issues with the 8GB card when it's plugged in to the card reader on a PC though for editing the footage - the card is not recognised by the PC, but strangely the 512mb one is.

I use an Epson R300 for the purpose of reading cards and all cards that we both have in existance be it SD, compact flash or memory stick work through it, it's just the above 8GB that does not - the pc does not recognise it.

Running XP SP2 with no issues doing anything else on the machine.

Does anyone have any idea how I can get this card working without losing the data on it?

David,
Try putting the 8GB card into the camcorder and hook the camcorder to your PC. (probably with a USB cable). The camera should have come with a CD that you can install onto your PC. You may have to purchase some editing software seperately, though.

I'll try that Doug. Strange though - every card I own can be read by the same PC and the 8GB card was bought independantly from the camera.

If it is an 8GB card it must be an SDHC card. This type might just not be recognized by your card reader.

If I bought a new card reader, from the spec of the reader how could I determine if it would be able to read an 8GB card?

IN the specs shoudl simply be stated that it supports SDHC cards...

I have asked the supplier of the 8GB card to return the card to me and they are also sending me a new USB HC card reader.
