Greetings. My new laptop has Windows XP Home and it came pre-loaded with Windvd 4 and it doesn't work. I've read about codecs and so forth on this site, but didn't see any for Windvd 4. Can someone please just tell me what I need to do to get Windvd to play dvds or some other application that works. Thank you in advance for your help. PS--I'm new at this, please don't get too technical in your answer :) TL

1. Have a look over here just as a basic configuration: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/48608
2. Have you considered uninstalling and reinstalling WinDVD? (or considered a different player alltogether?)

Please don't laugh at my ignorance, but I did read the posting about GSpot, I also added it to my desktop...but here's the thing--it's just a bunch of configurations to me---I really don't know what I'm looking at or what I'm looking for. I've also uninstalled and installed Windvd 4 about three times. I guess I'll re-read the posting about GSpot and hopefully get a better understanding of how to use it...considering that it was really late when I read it and I was quite frustrated.

1. Install GSpot. Check
2. Open GSpot.
3. Drag the movie you want to analyze into the GSpot window
4. GSpot will analyze the movie for you.
5. At the bottom of the GSpot window it will tell you if your comp can play the movie or not. You can get the specific information from the right hand panes (video at the top, audio in the middle)

Thank you for replying to my thread. Anyway, I do indeed have windows media player 9 and it says that it cannot play the dvd's b/c of digital copyright protection. Now here is the odd thing...I belong to the television academy and this past season they sent me a ton of dvd's to preview for voting purposes for the Emmys and almost all of those dvd's play on my laptop through windows media player 9 only. So I'm not sure what the problem is---also the movies that I'm trying to watch were all rented through netflix.com (I don't know if that's significant or not), but I'm going to try Blockbuster dvd's and see if I fare any better. One last thing-I downloaded the link you provided and the player does nothing. I select "play dvd" from the disc menu and there is no action taken. Any other suggestions? I'm two seconds away from taking this laptop back. Thanks.
