There are numerous versions, but 3.6 is hands down the most stable!

If you use codes, you could try Swap Magic 3.8 CODER. Never used it myself, but I've heard mixed reviews.

Here to check your version. As for what Swap Magic disc to get, I say the SM 3.8 coder is fine. It's basically 3.6 with an add-on, built-in cheat code device feature and the option of booting homebrews, exploits, or whatever with ease compared to Swap Magic 3.6. If you can get SM 3.6, I recommend getting it though if you're really worried about the game compatibility issue, but other than that, I've been content when using my SM 3.8 coder disc set and have been fond of them compared to using my friend's SM 3.6 disc set where the screen is slightly distorted in the Swap Magic menu but nothing much really after you boot the game, everything is fine. I have a silver slim v15 PS2 by the way and haven't really had much problems playing any games so far because I've been spending so much time with games that have a wealth of play value and time for you to spend like the Tales of Destiny (remake) on the PS2 and Valkyrie Profile Silmeria, plus, I have yet to finish up a Nippon Ichi SRPG.

Edit: Fixed link.

when you buy swap magic you get both the CD and DVD versions, and it is written right on the disc as to which one is which.

as far as knowing which game is CD and which is DVD. Well if you download them they will be different formats. DVD will be an ISO file, and CD based games will be a Bin & Cue file.

If you do these from originals then it will say right on the disc either DVD-Rom or CD-Rom (or compact disc)
