Watching Hi8 Tapes on a Digital 8 Camera??

I have a bunch of Hi8 tapes and Digital 8 tapes. The Hi8 tapes are from the early 90s and the Digital 8 tapes are from the late 90s to 2000. When I try to watch the old Hi8 tapes on our Digital 8 camera the footage looks good sometimes and then fades out and does crazy stuff. I don't think the tapes have gone bad or anything. Do I just need to get an old Hi8 camera and play the tapes through that to get my home dvds?
