I have 2 bigger PS2's that work fine. One from release that has not needed service yet and another that I got off of a friend because the drive wouldn't close (which works fine now). I travel a lot with my PS2 so I was thinking of getting a slim PS2. One of my friends is willing to sell me his for about $35. The only catch is that it doesn't read any discs. Are these DRE's in the slim PS2 easy to fix? Do you think I should go ahead and buy this PS2?

Depends what slim PS2 is it. I believe the v12 black slim PS2 needs a laser fix otherwise the laser will die out quick. Check here if you're interested or don't know how to check out what version the PS2 is. I personally have a silver slim v15 PS2 and have been somewhat dissatisfied of it because of the overheating issues and the poor ventilation system it has compared to the older fat PS2s where this problem was practically non-existent from my understanding and experience. If you only want to play your PS2 for a short 1 to 2 hours, it should be fine but buying a slim PS2 is totally up to you. I can go into further detail, but it's totally up to you if you want to hear me out.

As for replacing the slim PS2's laser, they're actually quite easy to replace. I have no idea about how to fix the slim PS2's laser though.

Thanks for the response. I know how to replace lasers in PS2's and im sure that I could figure out how to do it on the slim PS2. Replacing the laser though is what I didn't want to have to do. I might buy it, It will mostly be used in the car for traveling to NY, which is about a 2 hour drive.

No problem. You could always buy one of those add-on ventilation peripherals that can attach to the slim PS2, but I haven't found any that works to my liking. Just make sure you have your slim PS2 safely secured in a padded case or something because that thing is incredibly more fragile then a PSP and a DS in my opinion, lol.

Thanks for the reply. I have seen the slim PS2's and the drives on that (especially the flap for the drive) seems really fragile. I just like the way it looks. :D
