I don't know how new, but DVDFab seems to still work ok.
It's unlikely that the original disk could be messed up as it is a ROM device that cannot be written to.

DVDFabDecrypter
Insert disk, run program, select 'Main Movie'

I just backed up The Pursuit of Happyness and The Last King of Scotland with DVDFabHD Decrypter and handled these with no problems (as usual, i might add). These are the Newest Releases where im from (Ireland) so doesnt look like any different protection on my original DVD's. P.S the originals still play fine.
BTW Were all here to help

There is a new protection coming out called Protect-DVD and the movie Free Zone seems to have something new on it or at least a variation of Puppetlock. Slysoft just came out with stable beta version that has fix for this movie. Here is reply on it from James at Slysoft.

Don't know the "name" of the protection. But "names" are often incorrect anyway. What I thought being Protect-DVD may be called X-Protect. Maybe it is nor the "real" Protect-DVD? Until today, nobody knows what the real name for "Puppetlock" is...

Call it what you like, it is one of the many "CRC Error" protections.

Some observations:
1.) I don't think it is Arccos, although it works similar.
2.) I don't think it is based on RipGuard or PuppetLock
3.) It is not a Sony Disc (as per amazon.com)
4.) The rental version of "Der Freie Wille" (German) had a similar protection (wasn't a Sony disc, either)

Beta of AnyDVD here

Download:
http://sandbox.slysoft.com/beta/SetupAnyDVD6162.exe

Changes:
http://sandbox.slysoft.com/beta/changes_anydvd.txt

6.1.6.2 2007 06 14
- New (DVD): Added support for a new copy protection to the option to remove
"Protection based on unreadable Sectors", e.g. "Free Zone", R1, US
- Change (DVD): Because of popular demand, the "bad sector count
numbers" of versions before 6.1.6.0 are back
- Change: Shows correct disc size with virtual drives
- Change: Because of undesired side effects, the Sonic DLA behaviour before
version 6.1.5.4 is back
- Fix (DVD): Because of an internal overflow, some Sony Arccos
protections were not removed correctly (e.g., "UFC65", R2, UK)
- Fix (DVD): Possible hang if heavily scratched or damaged
Video DVD was inserted
- Fix (HD DVD & Blu-ray): In a rare situation, renaming the AACS directory
could fail (e.g., "The Hulk", HD DVD, US)

Also as an add-on there is a bill pending in US that will allow Sony to legally put out rootkit......so eventually we will all have to beware. Blu-ray disks will also have the ability to mess up players when backed up.

I usually have AnyDVD Rip it to my hard drive and then use DVD Shrink to access the files AnyDVD created.
