How do I burn downloaded movies to dvd?

I know this is an old topic but I am new to this and I am having problems. I have Nero 7.7.5.1 or at least that is what I am told. I tried the step by step but when I get to the end to burn I get an error message that says unable to prepare data for recording prepare sesions failed: transcoding of video failed. what am I doing wrong and also what is vso I hear a lot about that. Is it better and if so where do I find it. Anyones help in this will be greatly appreciated.
