Media Software sound and picture out of syn - help

I am experiencing some difficulties with my media players for movies etc. The sound is ahead of the picture, and is out of syn by as much as 4-5 seconds. Very difficult viewing. Is this because my laptop isn't powerful enough, or are there specific settings that are required? Can anyone assist? I have tried using Microsoft Media players and Nero
