Ok so a while back my psp just decided to stop reading UMD's it made a clicking sound then just gave up reading disc. it would then sometimes read some disc but not others. what i did to fix this problem is turn the psp so the back is facing you. pop off the UMD cover and UMD tray. now you should have access to the front side of the laser. there is a small screw under the lens. that screw is holding a thin piece of metal responsible for holding on to the little bar that spins so the laser moves back and forth. this piece aligns with the groves and it tends to become loose. what you do is take it out bend it so the part with the little nipple sticks out more. now screw it back on and it should have a tighter hold on the bar that makes it move back and forth. make sure the nipple falls in the groves. if your game times are longer then that means it is to tight and it is taking a lot of work to move the laser. solutions now would be to use a small amount of lubrication or to loosen it a bit but not to much because then the laser won't move.
you tube has a great guide on taking the psp apart, but note that you don't have to unscrew anything in order to get to the top side of the laser.in fact follow the guide that is in Spanish but skip all the way to the end where he shows you how to access the laser.
i don't have a camera so i can't add pictures but this is a simple procedure and pictures would help a lot of people so if someone could please do the honors of posting pictures of what i am writing about that would be awesome. so far to my knowledge this is a common problem and i feel this is the best solution asside from replacing the whole UMD components "which i ultimatly ended up doing"
