Hard drives?

So, I'm undergoing modding my version 7 playstation 2 and I had a few questions regarding hard drives. The first one being where do they jack in? I know they go into the expansion slot but where does the hard drive hook into? I only see a port for the network port hooked into the expansion port on the back of my V7.
Secondly, a reliable hard drive? I've checked out the unofficial compadibility list but most of the hard drive matches tend to have a REALLY low rating on newegg (popular for being burn outs). I was hoping to get a 250gb+ but would be happy with a 120/160. Anyone know a few good ones that I could find on newegg? Ones with good ratings and that won't require me to carve out my network card to make it fit -.-

You need to buy an official Sony network adapter to connect an IDE HDD. Unfortunately, ever since the slim PSTwo came out with it's built in network adapter, these adapters almost becamse exctinct. So, you can find one on eBay or MAYBE at GameStop/EBgames.
As for what HDD to use, i personally use a Maxtor 160 GB HDD and it works great.

Well it looks compatible, i bought my HDD at fry's so i checked that it works. But unless you patch your HDLoader, you'll only be able to use 137 GB of the HDD.

I am currently thinking about quitting swap magic and going with a chip and a hard drive. But what i would like to know is, will the PS2 recognize (or handle/take) 2 hard drives, an internal one and an extra in the expansion bay?

i do not know. But with a big enough internal one you would not need an external one. Plus internal runs faster and has better compatibility. Also make sure the chip you get can run a hard drive or has software you can get to run it like the Crystal Chip V2.0 or DMS4 Pro SE

and there is a had drive compatibility list for people who want to look into a model then check to see if it is reported as working. Seagate and Maxtor are your best bet as they fit easily.

thank you. But the reason i would like to (try to) have 2 hard drives working (possibly 2 300gb drives) is to keep my games on the internal and media (homebrew/divx/emus/apps/Linux(maybe?) on the other. It may cost me but if there is a way to do that without swapping or switching, then i'm pretty set. Plus with a 300gb I can possibly fit almost every ISO (and probably exclude a lot of stupid kid's-movie-based-games) in the US PS2 game set.

This thread is relevant to what I'm looking for, so I hope noone minds my joining. (I registered with the forums just to find answers to this ^^)
I recently acquired some money from graduation and birthday. (Yay me!) I was thinking I would be interested in buying an HD, try out the 'HDLoader' method. So, a few questions...
1) If the hd is used for loading up games, can it still be used for data storage as well? (I currently only have $100, and if an 80gb hd costs around $60 or whatever, I'd love to get out as much use of it as I can)
2) What are the best drives to get, compatibility and performance wise? Again, I only have about $100 to spend, so I'm *very* worried about an HD crapping out on me in a few months.
I currently use SwapMagic 3.8 w/flip top for fat PS2 to play backups. All has been going well, but lately I've noticed that it'll skip during cinemas in games - not during gameplay, that is, only during cinemas - and I worry the laser might be going. Plus I hear the HDLoader method is easier... but all the tech talk confuses me. (Eh, I'll blame it on me being a chick ;)
Any help at all for this would be so much appreciated. Thanks!

Well, you can have a IDE HDD installed for games and a USB HDD for media and stuff. Linux is impossible though.

For hard drives, I have yet to come across any IDE hard drive that WON'T work. Just note that Western Digital drives do not physically fit without altering the Network Adapter.
As for multiple hard drives, that is feasible. However, playing PS2 games from anything other than an internal drive is a waste.
For playing media off a USB drive, that entirely depends on what homebrew software you're running. myPS2 and SMS work for this, but I've found both to be buggy and not worth messing with.
In my mind, an ideal PS2 setup is one that boots to uLaunchELF. From there, you can easily set things up so that you can start an FTP server to allow access to the PS2 file system via a PC.
Also installing HD Loader and HDLD_SVR lets you play games off the hard drive and install them to the hard drive via FTP. Done right, your system never needs to move in order to be updated.
EDIT: You can run Linux on a PS2.

Thanks for the help guys, i think i'll get a maxtor 300gb internal IDE and im going to use my 250gb external USB drive.
