my brother paid for his xbox flashing i believe it is a hitachi 46, the guy who flashed it never gave him his original key on a disc , i believe his firmware is around a year old possible 1.6 is there anyway i can update it for him without the original key..?

The original key should be in the moded firmware thats on it now. You can just get the key from there.

Actually with Hitachi's, you don't rewrite the fw itself, you just patch around it. So just use the restore.bat to restore to original and then flash again. No need to worry about the key.
