I ordered a Matrix Infinity mod chip for my PS2, and I'm currently waiting for it to ship. However, I'm a bit concerned about a few things...
First of all, I've never soldered anything in my life. Having said that, I'm pretty sure I can figure it out.
Here are my questions:
1. Does it matter what soldering iron I use? The instructions recommend a 15 Watt soldering iron with a 0.1 mm tip.
2. The instructions imply, but do not explicitly state that I should use 20 or 22 awg wire for the ground and 3.3V connections, and 30 or 32 awg wire for the rest of the connections. Is this correct?
3. Do I need to clean everything with solvent first? Is this necessary, or just recommended?
4. My PS2 is fairly old, and doesn't read the disks with the blue/purple backs(gives disk read error). Does this mean my laser is weak? Will it be able to read burned media?
5. Does anyone know of any good tutorials that will help me install this thing? All I can find is installation diagrams.
6. I'm kinda confused about my PS2 version. It has 8 screws on the bottom. The number on the back is SCPH30001R. It has the electricity warning stamped on the bottom. Is it version 4, or version 5?

first off: matrix infinity, one of the best mod chips for ps2. i love mine. VERY nice choice. good job

use 15 watt, its less hot so that means that there is less chance to burn your

yeah. the THICKER wire is the one you use for ground and 3.3V. the THINNER wire is the one you use for the points. Alternatively, you can use like 4-5 thin wires to substitute the thick wires.
Quote: 3. Do I need to clean everything with solvent first? Is this necessary, or just recommended?
you should AT LEAST wipe your board to get off all the dust. its better if you wipe it.

blue/purple backs are actually CDs. gold/sliver backs are dvd. if your ps2 can read gold/silver backs then that means you should be able to read burned dvd. the ps2 lens has two lens, one for cd and one for dvd. acutally, you CAN adjust your lens so that it can read both the blue/purple and gold/silver backs. although, its an ass to do

ummm i used to have one but i dont know where i put it. try google

from what you said, im pretty sure you have a version 5. but still check here
on another note, youve never soldered anything right? i dont think you should tackle ps2 right away. you should really play around with other electronic equipment that you dont want first. like get one that works and try desoldering and resoldering the connections. get some practice with the very small points on a chip. ive installed around 5 matrix infinity green dot chips and its pretty time consuming if you want to do a good job. the points are very small though. i actually modded my ps1 first to test it out and gain exp.
in any case, GOOD LUCK!!! if you have any more problems, ask!

My PS2 doesn't have that v5 screw, so I'm pretty sure it is v4.
Also, this diagram is wired differently than the installation diagram:
http://teammodders.com/images/ps2install...rixinfinity.jpg
Installation diagram:
http://www.infinitymod.com/matrix/files/...V04R/USA-V4.JPG
The 3.3V, ground, and UVTQ connectors are all in a different place(it looks to be a no gap bios, but it is wired as if it were a gap bios). Which should I follow?
When I was taking my PS2 apart, that clip that holds the flex board in place for the memory card seems to have cracked. I may be able to put it back on, but does this really matter? Will tape work as well? >_<

follow the instruction one. does your bios have a gap? if it has a gap then its def a v4. make sure you get the right version or the mod chip wont work and youll risk damaging the whole thing.
the first installation picture is from davbere. he has years of experience and does beautiful work. he knows of other points to solder and that's why its different.
just follow the instructions for your version of ps2
btw, it doesnt matter about the flex thing, you dont even need it

Hmm. I couldn't find a small enough 15W soldering iron (the smallest one I could find was a 1mm tip, which appears to be way too big for this sort of work).
I think I want to get a professional to do it, but the only place I could find in my area that installs mod chips wants to charge $80 to install it. Considering I've already paid $50 for the chip, I think this is a bit unreasonable. For $80 I could almost buy a new PS2.
They also offer to install a Messiah 2 Pro in the PS2 for $100. This mod chip isn't listed in the FAQ on these forums. Is it any good? If installation is $80, then the chip must only cost $20, which makes it seem like crap considering I paid $50 for my Matrix Infinity.
How much does mod chip installation normally cost? Does anyone have any ideas on where I could find somebody to install my mod chip? I don't really want to wait long to get it installed. =/

I would recommend either Team Modders or NorCal Mods for a professional installation. They charge $40 or so for an install.
Unless you plan on doing multiple installs, I'd highly recommend letting a pro do the work.

dont do it ur self especialy if u nver soldered in ur life ppl may make it look easy but if u splash solder jerk ur hand shake ur hand
u will screw up ur ps2 badly especialy on a ps2 it has very small pads to solder traces can get tore up if u pul wire when it is dry common sense not to believe me when i first started i did a xbox with no clue how to solder i splashed solder ripped a trace burnt like 3 pads i ddnt use a pin header like a moron it is so much easier
as 4 ur laser try to clean it if that dont work turn up ur pot (pointometer) u can use 30awg wire for both or 22awg wire 4 both but it is reccommeded to use bigger for ground connections and smaller for pads especialy on a ps2 every thing on a ps2 is especialy small
yes use a 15 watt solder wire i reccommend u get solder flux prevents cross connections wich will probably fry your motherboard or do irreversable dammage for more info just google and read man all the info is out there u just gotta look 4 it

I decided to shell out the $80 and get the guy to do it. He can back up his work, so if he messes up at least I'm not completely screwed. And he's done it a lot before, so he should know what he's doing.
However, when I went to put my PS2 back together, I couldn't figure out how the flex board that connects the memory card and controller connectors together fit. I couldn't stick the tab back on, so I taped it. When I booted my PS2 back up, it didn't recognize the controllers.
Help!

I broke the little plastic thing that holds the ribbon in place. Well, it's still in one piece, but I couldn't figure out how to put it back on.

Please get the edited by ddp out of my thread. I'm trying to fix my PS2, and this is completely off topic. Thanks.

Anyway, thanks for your advice, KiNtArO01. I got it to work pretty good now. I stuck that plastic tab back on like you said, and then taped it in place.
I'll get it modded on the weekend.
