depends on source
depends on size
depends on your connection speed

Allot of factors depend on this.
How fast the persons download ISP connection is.
What torrent client you actually use.
If you have the torrent application installed and setup correctly.
If your using the correct ports.
If you have your firewall and the correct ports forwarded correctly on your router if you are using 1.
The size of the torrent itself.
How many torrents you have active downloading.
Even when you have everything setup properly it will still determine on the amount of seeders and leechers there are on the torrent itself.
I have everything set up correctly for me and I get speeds between 1kbps to 500kbps It all depends on the swarm speed of the torrent.
For more information on what ports to use and how to forward a port look at the below link.
http://portforward.com/
Plus look on the forum of the torrent site itself. They usually have guides on how to correctly setup a torrent client for you to get the most out of your Internet speed.

i just wanted to add that after being exposed ot newsgroups the last two weeks i'll avoid torrents as much as possible. Torrents I'm typically looking at ATLEAST a day no matter the site. Newsgroups your looking at around 2 hours or less guaranteed almost every time. As Tony the Tiger would say..............
They're Ggggggggggggreat!!!!!!!

Gotta agree with the above. I used to be a fool with my torrents and slow unreliable speeds. Ever since I started using newsgroups I haven't looked back, consistently high speeds, very rarely do you see a botched/fake post on usenet, whereas they are plentiful on torrents. And you can find anything you can imagine, if it's on vcdquality, nforce, theisonews etc. Guaranteed you will find it on newsgroups.
Takes me about 2-3 hours for a full size 4.5GB DVD from the groups to my Wii that is.

most of your ISP news group don't have a good retention time, you would have to go to a paid one that have up to 60 days of retetion time for you to grab. I paid like $15/month but it's worth it when you can get games, movies, and apps...

you will find that most isps do not even carry binary newsgroups although ntl do carry some but not ones with wii in them
you need to pay for a newserver - i use newshosting.com

there are free servers out there, but they suck. www.yottanews.com is the best and even that is garbage. You should just shell out the 15$/mth or get a one time pay account, it pays for itself in no time flat.

you're asking the wrong questions. it's not the newsgroups that get you the downloads. in my case its the channels you use on IRC to search for the nzb files. The whole process is somewhat complicated if you have never done it. I suggest downloading mIRC and going to a Wii channel. Find some1 knowledgable and that is willing to help you with what you don't understand. Unfortunately, for those that don't know what sites to go to it sucks. Just search for them on google. I'm pretty sure that everybody that uses newsgroups more than likely uses the same channel.

if you don't like IRC, use newzbin dot com or nzbmatrix dot net which will provide you with nice nzb with very little donation, well worth the cost.

why would you go to irc for newsgroups? just use newzbin.com or if you are too cheap find a free nzb site they are a dime a dozen these days.

you can get free nzb's from both
alt.binaries.nl
and my personal fav:
www.binsearch.info
They give you nzb files (which are just instructions for you newsgroup client, in my case newsbin, to download the files you need)
It's not the nzb files that cost, its the monthly cost of the servers. I pay 20 bucks a month for unlimited downloads from giganews and It has well since paid for itself!

ive never used newsgroups before. ive always been a member of torrentleech for a long time and it's served me quite well. the downside is that my connection is kinda screwed up now. i cant upload anything! thus, it's screwing up my download to upload ratio (which in turn may get me banned from the site :(
do newsgroups have this sort of thing? where you have to upload more than you download? if not, i might have to look into using newsgroups from now on...

you dont have to upload crap if you dont want to. nobody can see what you upload or download anyways unless you specifically put your name on the post.

depends on your service sometimes, but generally most people i know get between 400-600k on average -- people with better connections sometimes get better and people get worse. but it's fair to say that it's faster than most of your normal web direct downloads, xdcc/ctcp requests, and definately torrents -- especially since you get into multiple connections.
