The ventilation system in the fat PS2 is vastly superior than the slim PS2. The v15 silver slim PS2 I have overheats extremely bad, and it's quite noticeable during certain intervals within particular games I've played after an hour or so. I really have to follow the recommended playtime suggested by each and every PS2 booklet you can easily see in the first page, which is to let limit playing time to about an hour or 2 and rest periodically right after for at least 30 minutes. Even after all this special treatment I've been giving my slim PS2 -- stop playing at 2 hours tops, rest for a long duration like an hour or so -- the heat in the slim PS2 doesn't fully dissipate in most cases unlike in my v5/v6 fat PS2 where it filters out the heated air fairly well and keeps the motherboard and such very cool. You can actually still feel the warmth residing within the slim PS2 unlike the fat PS2.
I solely bought a slim PS2 because I also wanted to play PSX games, which I have been incredibly disappointed in. In a lot of PSX games I've played like Thousand Arms, Lunar SSSC and so forth, I've had problems affiliated with the slim PS2 rather than a game glitch, bug or issue. It's really heartbreaking considering my fat PS2 with a literal 5% probability in booting PSX games/CDs, can play it much more smoothly without any of these freezes, long loading times and so forth, which is why I've given up playing PSX games on the slim PS2 and mainly use it for PS2 games.
As you can see, most of my grief is based upon the air cooling system of the PS2 rather than it also being a fragile system. For most PS2 games I've played, if I play for about an hour or 2, everything is completely fine (it seems) and runs smoothly. But for the most part, I simply use the slim PS2 nowadays for its portability.
